Do laptop sleeves work?

sorry if this is the wrong place but there doesn't really seem to be a place and being this is about hardware i thought what the heck

As per the title i want to know if you think laptop sleeves protect a laptop.

When ym laptop is currently in a laptop bag but i'm feed up of carrying it about daily laong with my normal bag so i'm wondering if a laptop sleeeve would protect my laptop well enough.

No i don't through my bag about but at time it can take some knocks or falls (one metre max) so i'm wondering if a laptop sleeve would due the job.

It's certainly better than nothing... although I wouldn't very confident taking a laptop out in just that - if it fell, even if it wasn't curtains I'd imagine you'd wind up with a fairly nasty scratch/dent. Always used one in tandem with a padded rucksack, which means I can drop it from 1-2m without causing any problems.

I bought a laptop sleeve for my Lenovo N100 (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/swordf...18315-pdt.html) and am soooo glad I did

was going to the US and the strap of the bag containing my laptop broke (was one of those record bags) it fell from just over a meter and it saved my laptop. Very please that I bought it and spend the extra on one with a wire rim!

Well worth buying one so you can just chuck your laptop in your normal bag. Also basically essential if you want to travel on a plane with laptop these days as you're only allowed a single carry-on.

Only thing to be careful of is that you don't have so much crap in your bag that it caves in the top of the laptop (i.e. damaging the screen). Not a problem with a well-made laptop, but I've certainly had laptops in the past where the screen could get damaged like this.

On the topic, my classmate dropped his Macbook yesterday as he forgot to close the zip of the sleeve and it dropped out when he pick the thing up. He is very unhappy about having a dent on the corner.

While the sleeve protect you from day-to-day wear, it can't protect you from this kind of accidents. If it does, certainly it is too tight and give you more wear rather than less.

are you saying the sleeve doesn't protect the laptop when the laptop is not in the sleeve? *makes note*

Sleeves mainly protect from scratches and slight bumps, however they are not foam padded like actual laptop bags.
You could make one out of foam and material, too much like sewing?
Then get a carry mat, (one of theos foam mats you use when camping.) Cut it into correct sized squares and gaffer tape it together.
May not look so pretty but it's just going to live inside your main bag.

Actually getting a carry mat and cutting out a section to line the bottom of your bag will probably be a good help anyway.
