I'm looking for a 13-14" laptop for £1000+ which has the space for me to add a 2.5" SSD.
I can't see the spare sata expansion slot listed in any spec anywhere... do these laptops exist?

Would the/an optical drive be needed? I'm fairly sure they can be replace with 2.5" drives using an adapter.

Yes. I want to leave the laptop as is (with original HDD/optical), and just add an SSD.

I've never seen a 14", let alone 13" notebook with an optical drive and two 2.5" HDD bays! I'm sure they don't exist.
As Matty suggested you can replace the optical drive with a HDD, most laptops with standard optical drives can be replaced with 2.5" caddies. One step up from this is a modular bay; where an optical drive and HDD with its caddy can be hot swapped without tools, like I can do with my Dell Latitude E6400.

So I would need a monster DTR for 2 x 2.5" + optical?
That sucks.
What about 15-17" laptops as long as they are not too heavy?
Msi ge700?

You can always try and find a Laptop with a spare mini PCI-E slot and chuck an SSD in there. you probably won't get the same performance as a 2.5" drive, but will keep your options open

I've just got the i5 m430 in my Vostro 3700, and it's doing a stellar job so far, if you want me to run any benchies just let me know
SuperPi 1m is ~18.2s, so its not the fastest, but it's certainly nowhere near sluggish compared to other options
the i5 m430 is quad
Not HT though, HT is only on i7s![]()

Must admit I never knew anyone made laptops with 2 hard drive bays.

my dads vaio laptop has dual hard drive slots and 13" but it's a few years old, i'm sure they've moved to single drive now
I don't know mate, some of the drives on scan are claiming Write speeds of 100MB/s and Read speeds of 150MB/s
