    New PC build comments/suggestions etc

OK i'm going for max performance here and i want to do a little bit of overclocking (probably about 400MHz).

    CPU:

    Intel Core i7 960 Bloomfield 45nm, 3.20 GHz

    MOBO:

    Asus Rampage II Extreme

    Memory:

    6GB (3x2GB) Corsair Dominator GT, DDR3 PC3-12800(1600), CAS 7-7-7-20

    PSU

    1000W Corsair CMPSU-1000HXUK

    CPU Cooler

Corsair H50-1 Hydro Series High-performance CPU Watercooler

    GFX

    I own a 4870X2.

I'm going to wait until Nvidia release a dual gpu GTX480 or ati bring out a new dual gpu card

    My questions:

    1)Is all of this compatible?

    2) Given i'm going for max performance are there any improvements i can make? (12 GB seems to do nothing for performance)

    3) Do you think i can achieve a 400Mhz oc on stock voltages?

    4) Any suggestions/comments?

    (Sorry i can't post URLs)

Thanks very much for your time

What do you need a 960 cpu for? Isn't a 1000w psu is a bit of an overkill?

I assume you already have an os, hard & optical drives, etc.

Unless you specify what you are going to use the computer for, it's difficult to say.

    1) Yes.

    2) If you want max performance I wouldn't bother with NVIDIA.. Their cards seem like a total waste of time.

    3) 400Mhz, easy, but I'd look at a different CPU.

    4) I'd recommend getting a much cheaper processor. Maybe the i7 930 and overclock it? That processor will overclock to the same sort of region as the 960 for a fraction of the cost. Then you can spend the money you're saving on the graphics or an SSD maybe?

Westmere's are faster, but the 920/930 or lynnfield are better value for money.

The 5970 is out already, look out for new eyefinity6 4gb versions coming soon.

As in previous posts a 930 will be better value for money, spend the diff on an SSD and you are good to go. I still think a 1000w is overkill, a 750 will be more than enough for your needs.

As above; if you're unsure about power usage check the reviews. All the reviews are done pretty much on an OC'd i7 now so will give a good comparison.
