new processors and gfx card release dates

    Hey there,

I think my pc is dying and i was planning on upgrading it soon anyway.

    I am primarily a gamer

i was thinking of getting an i7-980X, but after looking at the benchmarks i noticed that there was practically no performance increase with games.

I then considered a i7-975 EE until i noticed that unless i was going to overclock it (which i'm not) there was little point in getting it so i was thinking of getting the i7-960. I am right here

    My questions

    1) Am i right about 6 cores being of little use to gaming?
    2) Am i right about the 960 being practically as good as the 975 given that i am not going to OC it?
    3) Does anyone know when the next generation of intel chips are coming out?
    4) Does anyone know when the next lot of graphics cards are coming out (ATI or nvidia)?

    Thank you

The next generation of Intel and AMD processors will be released next year and will be new designs AFAIK.

You might want to wait until the Phenom II X6 is released next month since if it is competitive with the lower end Core i7 processors it should help drive prices down. The Phenom II X6 processors also implement a form of Turbo Boost too it seems.

TBH,if you are not overclocking then don't go with socket 1366! The socket 1156 Core i7 processors have a better implementation of Turbo boost over the socket 1366 processors and are hence faster for gaming.

The Core i7 870 is around the same speed as the i7 965 for gaming:

Anyway I would save the money and get a Core i7 860.
