PC desks?
Hi, Not quite sure where to put this one as it's not really pc hardware so if a mod/admin would like to move it to the correct forum, feel free.
I'm on the look out for a nice size pc desk to put my video editing setup on. i'm looking for all sorts of type just needs to be able to hold a far bit of weight (2-3 monitors) and preferable with lots of shelves for storage space. ideally i'd like to hold all my stereo equipment in it too. Anyone know some good places to look with a wide range. i thought they'd be easy to find but was wrong.
thanks

I would go to a 2nd hand office furnature shop. They have lots of furnature taken out from real offices, so there not useless desks like found in Argos - they are actually big, spacous desks with decent sized draws etc.

Maybe build it
I built my own dual-monitor pc desk that holds lots of equipment, including one pc and two battery backup units. This desk is on wheels (4"casters) and has two shelf-like forward surfaces - one for keyboard, the other for second kb, phone, book, etc.
This thing is made of wood: 2x4 (1.5" by 3.5") framework and .75" plywood for surfaces.
The downside is that it takes a bit of time to round the edges of the wood for user/equipment friendliness and to finsh the surfaces if you want it to look attractive.
But if you have OK carpentry skills and tools - and time - it's rewarding.
I designed mine small enough to easily roll through doors from one room to the other. Use high-quality wheels - at least 3" diameter.
Planning to build another later this year: The current one works beautifully, but I built it in 2001. Now I want to accommodate more pcs, use angle iron for the skeleton.

IKEA! "The home of the flatpack"!

Unfortuantely i don't have either the time or the skills to build my own, otherwise i would, i'd make it incorporate my hi fi system too, which at the moment is another storage unit i need to get (any suggestions, feel free to say)
Ikea was actually the first place i checked, thats where my current tv/seperates unit is from, and i was shocked when i found just how little choices they had on their website.
I was pleasantly surprised today though when i went in staples, they had a few nice ones in there that i'm considering, but i'm still looking. thanks

What about Viking supplies?? But the suggestion of a second hand office shop is a good one :) My dad picked up 4 £450 desks for his office at £75 a pop and they were like new!

i just got some kitchen bench and have two drawer cabinets to support it - its deep, sturdy and rounded already
it always annoys me when I see 'computer desks' in agros or whatever.
They're never deep enough
the monitor on a different level to the keyboard
a keyboard tray that just about accommodates the mouse if at all
little room for wrist support/arm support
keyboard way too high up
monitor stands to the side
shelves for your printer etc that get in the way of your legs
flatpack RSI hell!!!

I got mine from a local auction for £20 - check em out theres usually various bargains about even if you don't find a desk ;)

Have a look at the Office World catalogue - they have some interesting sets ups - combination of desk, hutch, shelving etc.

Another vote for 2nd hand office furniture. For the same money as some cr4p Argos / Ikea flat pack desk you can have a pick up proper office furniture which will serve you well. Take a tape measure, haggle a little bit and ask for free delivery. Auctions are good if you want a job lot.

Real office furniture is just so far ahead of flat pack rubbish there really is no choice. Considering if you shop around for good 2nd hand stuff there isn't even a price issue really. Also the office furniture won't need replacing with anything near the regularity of flat pack. And won't collapse suddenly, dumping your monitor unceremoniously on the floor.
My own office furniture has been in constant use for 2 years and still looks good, is home to 2 PCs, a multi-purpose printer and a TV (occaisionally a laptop or 2 as well). With plenty of space to utilize and will no doubt give me service for a long time to come yet. Well worth the money I spent on it.
