Single channel ram shouldnt affect things buddy.

Does your cpu usage drop when the file isnt being played ?

    No, I'm using 1 stick of DDR3.

when the file isn't being played an I am typing to you in firefox, it hovers at around 15% (which is still a bit high for idle I think...)

Tried Sims link above and the video still stutters.

I think I'll try to install win 7 64 bit and start fresh. I've installed so many codecs on this thing I don't know what's happening with it anymore! I'll follow the advice in this thread from the beginning.

Personal experience that video playback was better in x86 than x64 OS's.

just rebooted, wmp11 is playing all the files silky smooth at 20-30% CPU utilisation. I have no idea why, but I'm not going to argue with it =)

Thanks very much with all your help everyone, it's helped a lot!

Were you not rebooting after installing codecs?

    Re: AMD X2 240 2.8ghz can't play 1080p?

I did install codecs, but to be honest I hadn't tested WMP11 before, I was focusing on VLC, WMP classic HC and Quicktime. (which as pointed out earlier, 2 of those are only single threaded so won't work)

I guess I was just surprised that I'd have to do any of this to make it work. I would have thought that this setup would be totally fine for any video I could throw at it.

I think I will do a full reinstall anyway and systematically install the CoreAVC codec and see what difference it makes. I was hoping to use a front end like Boxee to run all these videos, I'll have to test it out today.

To be honest now I'm also worried about it decoding freeview HD when a PC card comes out, as this was one of the driving factors for purchasing the machine. It was supposed to handle everything that was thrown at it with ease, it's just made me wonder whether I've invested in the wrong chip/mobo for the future. Ahh well, live and learn.

Last but not least, Thank you Sim for all your help! how do I give "thanks"? I can't see a thanks button on the page anywhere....

    Re: AMD X2 240 2.8ghz can't play 1080p?

Well, for reference I run my media center with an asus amd m3n78-vm and an athlon ii 240, no overclocking.
Had a number of issues during the windows 7 beta phase with drivers and codecs but since retail it's been fine. Can play 1080p files in media center, media player, mpc, vlc, quicktime without issues. Sure I have dxva enabled but there are sometimes files that won't use dxva so I know the cpu is more than capable. Also powerdvd without dxva still works on bluray and hddvd.
So any issues you've had aren't down to the cpu.

Also, re: sim, the thanks button is on the bottom right of each post.

From a quick google it looks like your motherboard doesn't have sideport graphics ram, so that single stick is doing a lot of work.

My old Nvidia 6150 chipset motherboard was certainly a bit of a dog with only one DDR2 stick.

    Re: AMD X2 240 2.8ghz can't play 1080p?

Your situation is definitely strange. no reason the hardware can't cope with it. Must have been a software issue. Good to see the problem appears to be fixed, though at 20-30% CPU load I'm assuming the GPU isn't taking any of the workload. And I thought the HD4200 was capable of that. Hmmm....

It is, depending on software used. Add another stick of ram to get things running smoother
