Whats the best overclocking core 2 quad?
Probably the Q6600 G0, only about £150-170 at it's full release price, but some can overclock to 4GHz on air, including myself..
Or maybe the Q9550, but that's much more expensive and not as tolerant with voltages..
It depends on the VID of the processor you have!! Later Q6600 processors tended to have a higher VID which meant they needed higher voltage during overclocking.
I've heard a lot about the G0's, are they 45nm or 64nm? iirc thats what determins the voltage right?
If you want high overclock, avoid Q8200/8300/8400/9450/9550.
The FSB is simply way too high to be overclocked past 3.6Ghz. I've been quite unsuccessful in pushing my FSB past 425 on P965/P35/X38 motherboards, no matter the cpu/ram/nb voltage.
The Q6600 G0 was the best chip for ages, but I can't believe it still is, surely something better has come along in the time since August 2007... Mine is running along happily at 3.2Ghz, best chip I ever bought if you consider its longevity, but there must be a better buy now surely...
btw most get around 3.4GHz, 4Ghz is rare for this chip on air.
Mine wouldn't do 3.4-3.5GHz but would easily do 3.6GHz upwards O.o
The Q6600 was a bit of a legend so it's a good bet for overclocking. I've not heard great things about the Q8xxx chips though so probably best to stay away from them.
