WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
Lo people
I've got a 1.5Tb drive here.. Western Digital EARS. I stuck it into my Intel system (965 chipset) but the BIOS sees it as an ATAPI CD drive! And Vista Disk Manager doesn't see it at all.
And in my Home Server (Proliant ML115) it doesn't see it in BIOS at all.. nothing.
Now I know sometimes a WD software needs running to realign the sectors, to suit Vista or XP relevantly but surely that's not what is needed here?
BIOS doesn't even know it's there.
Any idea's my good people?
(i've delayed the IDE Detect time out to 10 seconds on the Pro liant and through all of that time the drives clicks and is spinning, but it then times out looking)
Re: WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
Is there a jumper on the back of the drive at all ??

It should work fine in default mode, I've just looked at the back of my 500 Gig WD AAKS drive and there's no jumper connected and it works fine, doesn't matter what SATA port or system I connect it to it just works.
I'm wondering if thats got a faulty controller board on it ?

I've got 4 other WD drives, no problems with any of them.. just this one
It worked for AlSenior in his Server before he posted it to me though.
Must be something else....
Re: WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
I was about to say SATA cable but you've ruled that one out as you've just tried other WD drives I would imagine on the cable your using for the new drive.
Re: WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
two different cables in two different machines..
Re: WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
The only other thing that might be worth trying (although I suspect you have) is a bios flash of the machine your using.

my intel mobo BIOS is as new as is possible.. but yes I think it might be a BIOS issue
I hate flashing bios... hate it
Haven't done the Proliant as it's so new.
Will try this HDD in a USB caddy next
Re: WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
If it doesn't work in a USB caddy then you've certainly got a bios issue there I would say.
Re: WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
doesnt workin the usb caddy.. but what has been useful to find in the USB caddy is that there is no other PC noise.. it's gota power brick
and the drive isn't spinning... there's no rotation.. just the sounds of a read head going back and forth...
think it's borked... will sort with Scan and WD
Re: WD 1.5Tb EARS drive not recognised in BIOS or Vista
I had a feeling the drive was dead :(
