    Abit IC7-G fails on start-up

I have a new Abit IC7-G that is having a few teething troubles to say the least. Wonder if anyone else has had the same problems.

When I first installed the board it ran but would not POST. I could switch on system power and it ran until I switched it off. No output to the monitor though. I thought that perhaps the graphics card was the problem but that works fine in another machine.

I have now tried this with a different CPU, memory and PSU. The board fires up for 5 seconds, lights and fans all go, and then shuts down. This behaviour is consistent in all setups.

    Original set up:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz Prescott.
Kingmax PC3200 SuperRAM 400Mhz 512 MBit RAM (one module)
    Jeantec 450 Watt PSU

    Test Setup:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz Northwood
Siemans 512 MBit RAM (one module)
    300 Watt PSU

With the motherboard on the bench we put a shorting strap across the power pins to switch system power on. The board began to start and then shut down after 5 seconds each time. The speaker returned one long beep until the board shut itself off. Restarting the board produced no sound from the speaker and the board shut down again after running for 5 seconds.

Anyone out there with a similar problem can they let me know? If no joy then Overclock (the supplier) has given me an RMA number and have said they will replace it if faulty with no hassles. Would rather fix it though if poss.

My IC7-G didn't come with this set on , but you may want to check the CMOS jumper. Sounds obvious but worth checking.

Presume you have no hdds/fdd/cd/dvd or anything but gfx ram and chip plugged in.
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

Yes, checked the CMOS as I reset it in case that was a problem. Took everything off including the graphics card. Still no joy. I ran the graphics card on another machine and it works fine. In fact it's still working fine as I'm not having a Radeon 9800 XT 256 Meg sitting in a box while I mess about on an old 64 meg card

I now have an empty case sitting under the desk while I fight for PC time with the kids on what they now regard as 'their' machine Still, I will get my revenge when I remove the graphics card once I get this thing running IF I get it running

I had a similar problem with my IC7-G after installing a new heatsink. My problem was that i connected the fan with a 4 pin connector and didnt connect it to the board. It's working great after i connected the 3 pin into the cpu fan hub on the board. Make sure you have all the connections set up correctly. Otherwise, it could just be a bad board.
    Good luck

We exhausted all possibilities and RMA'd the board. Pain in the a**e. Now I have to wait for the vendor to send out a replacement. In the meantime i have a very nice Antec case full of fans but not a lot else sat under the desk. I s'pose I could always turn those on and admire the neon effect.

Yes. I'm feeling sorry for myself

It was a faulty 4 pin 12v ATX socket. Board replaced by vendor as faulty. Should be back in my case within the next day or so.

    Talking

Sent back Thurs, arrived at vendor Fri, tested and found faulty Mon, arrived back on Tues. Got a call from home this morning. It's waiting for me to come and install it into its shiny new Antec home

    Not bad service I think.

Be rude not to I also have a nice shiny Zalman CPNS7000C-Cu in transit just for that nasty hot chip. And I have to say I am very impressed with the cooling of the Antec 1080 AMG case. So all things being equal I shouldn't burst into flames just yet

I did read on another forum that the Abit board should be burned in for about a month before overclocking it. So I may just curb my enthusiasm for a while. Then lets see how far cry runs
