    CAN this work ?

A friend of mine has just, in good faith, bought a new processor for his mobo.

The mobo is a GIGABYTE ga-7dxr.. and the processor is an athlon 2400+. Before he bought the processor he checked out that it was supported on the gigabyte website.... sure enough. He showed me the link.

Anyway... This cpu is an FSB 266 as far as I can remember, and the manual for the board states that it does not have this option. Is there anyway to resolve this ?

At the mo the computer is not booting at all... All the fans power up but there is no sign of life. The jumpers might not be set correctly, and frankly the manual is not helping much for this.

first check the fsb jumpers if any are set to 133fsb ,check everything else is connected and seated properly (including cpu/heatsink ,also try disconnecting/removing everything but the video card memory and cpu and see if it boots

it looks like it may also need the latestest bios version F10 ,if it aint got that you will need to put the old cpu back in to flash the bios if you cant get to boot by trying everything else first

kkk... Cheers for the response there. I figured out that it needs a bios flash. But this means sticking the old cpu back in and lots of fiddling. If only the gigabyte website had highlighted this fact when it listed the cpu's the mobo could handle. You really have to look for it !

Anyway. He is not that comp. savy, and rather than fiddling around with it - or letting me - he is taking it into a shop to get the charging chimps to do it. I mean.. I was there recommending that we unplug everything bar a graphics card and then have a real go at getting it to work. But. It was late and he was starting to think that the hardware was bust.
