    PSU/New GPU Dilemna

I sold a friend at work my 8800gts 512 to upgrade his system last week. I just got a phonecall form him saying when he plugged it in the system turned on and all he got was a blank screen and no post beep. He sounded pretty pissed and I suspect he thinks I've sold him a dud. It turns out he got a new PSU from Maplins and what I can gather from what he said its this one:-

    400W xpower PSU.

If the PSU was not supplying enough power it should cut out? The card was working when I gave it to him so I'm a bit worried that he might have smoked it. I suppose the mobo has not posted an undetected GPU so my fears may not be completely founded but the symptons are pretty common on knackered cards.

Would a mobo bios flash be a possible fix? I'm worried the PSU is not up to it and the recommendation is to return the no name fire bomb and probably go with the OCZ 400W banded around the best buys.

If anyone has any ideas please post. I need sympathy as much as anything........

The power supply is not powerful enough (17 amps on the 12v rail), even the comments in the link you posted say that it won't run a 9600gt. So your friend will have to buy a better PSU.

I would probably go with the OCZ 400W StealthXStream as a minimum:

This 530W PSU is also worth considering:

    Re: PSU/New GPU Dilemna

Have you managed to get any info for the 530Wer. I saw it a while ago but the review were a bit thin on the ground.

    EDIT:

Paper trail Bequiet homepage's spec for the PSU reveals the manufacturer to be E130843.

jonnyguru.com list of PSU manufacturers reveals it tobe made by Topower.

Topower seemto have a reasonbaly distinguished list of names including Tagan, OCZ and BFG. They also supply spire and dynapower. Would still like the review!

Here is a review of the Be Quiet PSU in German:

    http://www.au-ja.de/review-be-quiet-...er-l7-13.phtml

I don't know what brands of capacitors they use though although the other Be Quiet units seem to use decent companies.

    Re: PSU/New GPU Dilemna

The 350W version of the Be Quiet L7 PSU seems to use a Teapo primary capacitor:

    http://www.technic3d.com/article-924...-aufgelegt.htm

It seems that the L7 series are made by Topower(as mentioned earlier) and use Teapo primary capacitors:

    Re: PSU/New GPU Dilemna

that's weird the psu conked out, I've been running a 8800GTS on a over clocked multi drive system for a few years, with a antec 380w psu.

The 8800GTS uses a single 6-pin PCIe connector and is a fairly weak graphics card. It doesn't use that much power.

Sure, I agree with that, which was why I was surprised about the 400w PSU in post 1...

    Re: PSU/New GPU Dilemna

It turns out he got a s775 mobo with a VIA chipset. This brilliant chipset is incompatable with the g92 cores.

Thanks for all the advice, I've recommended he returns the PSU.

I'm now stuck with two GPUs so will look into getting rid of one of them. :/
