Question Help - Heart transplant for my ML115 G5

    Hi everyone,

I have an ML115 G5 which I use as my media store for DVD's and MP3's. All fine and dandy... Until I decided I wanted to output to my TV as well. And this is where the trouble starts!

Firstly, the heatsink fouls on the CPU heatsink which is flexing the card So the layout on the HP board is, well, rubbish.

Secondly, the board seems to have problems with Memory utilisation as it can't handle 8GB RAM, 512MB on the card and, 256MB from the RAID Controller?? If I take it back down to 1GB single stick it works fine but that's not really ideal. (Blue screens and various other faults keep appearing)

SO... to the crunch of the thread! I'm looking at swapping out the board to something else and I need some help tracking down an alternative option.

    Criteria:

Must be micro ATX with standard 24pin Power and 4pin ATX power connects (I don't plan on swapping the PSU and that's what it has.

Must have 4DIMM slots (DDR2), and also be AM2+ (compatible with an Opteron 1352 CPU)

Ideally it should have PCI-E x16 slot for the graphics card AND a PCI-E x4/8/16 slot for the RAID controller I plan to run (HP P212 with 256MB Cache)

If the above point is not possible ONBOARD graphics with HDMI out would be acceptable leaving a x16 slot for the RAID controller.

So not a tall order at all but I'm hoping someone has been where I am and knows exactly the motherboard I need?

    Thanks in Advance!

That board looks like it's exactly what I'm after!

Thanks so much, I'd been looking at Asus and Gigabyte and nothing was standing out from the crowd!

I knew the Hexites wouldn't let me down

Now where did I leave my credit card!

    You're welcome

I still keep trying to work out ways of justifying one of these for myself - especially now the HD5570 is available - I reckon they should be goers in crossfire, and a pair of them on one of these in a low profile case would be a monsterous lan party box

Re: Help - Heart transplant for my ML115 G5

    Hi Monty,

Sorry for the slow response, I've been away in Spain all week

I did indeed buy the Lanparty JR "HOWEVER" something which I didn't account for is that HP don't use standard connectors for front IO (Lights, Power switch, USB's) on their case.

So I ended up tearing down the ML115 G5 build and have rebuilt in another mATX case with a few bits and bobs Cost me more but now I don't have to fight with the computer to make it work with the cards (RAID card, Gfx, TV) and the memory and everything seems to be working a treat. TV, Video, Music, backups and interweb all on my TV

My ML115 G5 is now in vanilla form running VMware while I work on my qualifications and then I think I'll have to sell it as it's taking up valuable real estate in the flat and will be surplus once I've got my VCP (or more if work will help out with the costs!)

The ML115 G5 will take 8GB of ram I've just found it doesn't play nice with addin cards AND 8GB. You might have more luck though...
