    Core i7 mobo suggestion pls

    Lo people

For a moderate overclock of an i7 920, with 6 gig of Corsair XMS3 1600 (ie lower end ram) what are the suggestions for rock solid build quality and good soundcard.

Plenty of USB and SATA helpful. Full size to go in a big case.

Does one really need an Asus Rampage2 or can we lower the budget and even improve on solid stablity?

    Scan links appreciated... cheers

Personally I do like Asus but also like Gigabyte and MSI. I can be swayed by your greater knowledge guys

    I would get this motherboard:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigab...6Gb-s-RAID-ATX

It has SATA 3.0 which should be helpful for future SSDs. No point spending more on an x58 motherboard unless you have loads of cash.

What is this PC being used for and are you overclocking?

He said a moderate overclock, so I'm guessing 3.2-3.6 maybe?

If the build is more for video encoding and rendering it would be useful to look at the Phenom II X6 especially with the cheaper AMD motherboards.

For gaming the Core i7 920 is better in most cases although the Core i5 750 is on special offer at Aria:

One of the Asus P6T variety ?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

No and No.. I know we should be.. but we're not.

SATA 3 .. if it goes as fast as SATA 2 did over one..not really. but maybe with SSD potential.

    USB 3.. no.

    Good questions though

Re: Core i7 mobo suggestion pls

Unless you need 16X/16X Crossfire a socket 1156 Core i5 750 should be more than enough for a single card setup. Of course socket 1366 will last longer as a viable socket than socket 1156 from what I have read.

Also I have been hearing that the newer Core i7 920 and 930 CPUs are not as good overclockers too although I would investigate this first.

The gigabyte board linked too by Cat is what I would get. It was incidentally the top overclocker in bit-tech/custompcs grouptest.

I thought the gaming champs were the lynnfeild chips, eg i7 860 and 1156 m/board:

Then it's just a case of picking motherboard based on whether you think you will need huge numbers of lanes for crossfire/SLI in which case go for one of the boards with a nf200 chip.

you're right of course.. but I think it's the future cpu's for the other boards he wants. Fair enough.
