try to make sure u get a dual format drive (Writes to both + and - dvds) I beleive 8x is the standard write speed now but make sure u get at least 4x. lite-on are the best manu imo but thats open to debate. I suggest that you use DVD-R(w) not DVD+R(w) but thats all down to personal preferance.

Although if you can wait a few months and have a large wad of cash available then you should wait untill dual-layer recording drives are out.

Toms had a good comparison. What I got from it is the NEC is a great bargain. The Plextor PX-708a is the best (of course) for speed and reliability and the Lite-On had a few problems.

Lite-On certainly does make the best CDRWs, I was surprised they didn't do better in the DVD reviews.

I've been using both a Plextor and NEC for a few weeks. There's relatively no difference.

i have the Nec 2500a, on clean DVD disks it really flies (had 8.6x reads) and is quite cheap, but its not that great with scuffs.

the advantage of the lite-on is that they read anythign, i mean anything, but having said that my lite-on has just died on me having used it for about 3 months fairly heavily i was a bit dissapointed, but i could just be uncluky cos my mate brought the excat same one at the exact same time and his is humming along fine, so the choice is yours, but the liteons will read anything (even toast )

Lite-Ons also tend to be physically shorter - handy if you have a Shuttle etc.
    All effort is useless
