In that case, I'll just grab a PII X4 BE for now and see how I go. I'll also look into getting a SSD to speed things up a bit.

Does DDR3 give much of a performance upgrade relative to DDR2?

Thanks for all the support/suggestions - gotta be the most helpful forum around!!

    Re: CPU and Mobo upgrade?

We need to know what PSU the OP has ATM!

It seems that the motherboard the OP has can only support 95W processors:

    http://www.foxconnsupport.com/cpusup...VMX-K&cputype=

    TBH, I would get a 95W Phenom II X4 945:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172684

I would save the rest of the budget on a new system next year.

    Re: CPU and Mobo upgrade?

Okay, so I have my new CPU, Mobo and RAM:

AMD Phenon II X4 Black Edition 3.4GHz (125W)
    Corsair 3GB DDR3 TR3X3G1600C8D
    Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H

Would I need to get a higher power PSU?

    Re: CPU and Mobo upgrade?

Your current PSU should be fine.

Out of interest, why the 3GB RAM kit? Using that won't make best use of the dual channel memory controller - you'd have been better off with a 4GB kit, I'd've thought...?

I know nothing about buying RAM so I went by Gigabyte's list of compatible RAM chips. I didn't want to spend more than £100 on RAM (for now) and at £80, this kit seemed okay.

Could you recommend me a 4GB kit (up to £100)?

If you have to have a 'kit':
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-%...-9-9-9-24-150V

    Otherwise two of these:

will save you a bit more.
