    eSATA query

    Hi chaps,

I just received a new external HDD enclosure from Scan (with a HUGE hole in the side of the box, thanks City Link) that has both USB and eSATA outputs. Currently it has an old PATA drive in it.

Plugged into my PC through USB, works fine. Plugged in with eSATA, nothing happens.

    What am I missing?

System as per my system on the left, and up to date nVidia drivers are installed. I've never used the eSata port before..

    Thanks.

Edit: It's an nForce 570 Ultra chipset...forgot to add that in.

Complete shot in the dark but the eSata port is enabled in your PC's BIOS right?

Unless the enclosure incorporates a PATA to SATA bridging chip (doubtful), I should think it would only work with a SATA drive on the eSATA output.

In fact, this one states in the blurb: "NOTE : If using eSATA connection you will only be able to connect a SATA HDD."

    Re: eSATA query

The AKASA drive cases are like this. eSATA only works with SATA drives as it is just a pass through, only the USB connection lets you use PATA drives.

This seems to solve the question! It's an Akasa enclosure that I bought. No eSATA for me then.

    Thanks!
