Re: More low profile cooler advice
A while back when I was slowly moving over to 775 (via an ASRock motherboard) I went from a athlon xp2400+ & 6800LE (unlocked&clocked to GT level) to a Pentium D 3ghz and geforce2mx on a 350w psu, I tried it with the 6800LE but it couldn't cope.
I then upped the PSU to a 470w thermaltake TR2 (420w continuous and only 14a+15a on the 12v) which let me use both pentium D & 6800LE
Theos temp numbers sound about right The pentium D does run hot, just keep it under 60c full load and you should be fine.
PS which 6800LE do you have? I had the leadtec one which had the added advantage of coming with the same heatsink leadtec used on the 6800GT a humongous lump of copper on both sides of the card
Re: More low profile cooler advice
The CPU isn't strictly idle in BIOS as the power saving features (at least some of them) are started by the OS so your CPU should run cooler when it's 'properly' idle.

I am currently running an Nvidia 6600 as it is bus powered. I think the 6800LE was a POV or XFX one.
It only use DDR1 IIRC but I could fully unlocked to 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders. Using a Zalman VF900 I overclocked the GPU to around 370MHZ to 380MHZ IIRC although the RAM had more limited overclocking potential. Basically the card probably had performance between that of a 6800 and a 6800GT as it has less memory bandwidth as the 6800GT used DDR3.
The 250W Shuttle PSU was fine with the modified 6800LE and an XP2800 at stock speeds. If I tried overclocking the XP2800 it was a bit too much for it so either I could have an overclocked CPU and a stock 6800LE or a modified 6800LE and a stock XP2800.

That is good to hear! I may try a Linux distro though instead of XP.
Any good temperature monitoring programmes for Linux?
Re: More low profile cooler advice
You can monitor temps/voltages/etc under Linux with lm-sensors but I've found it's not hugely compatible. There are various graphical frontends for it such as KSesnors (for KDE) and I think conky supports it too.
Re: More low profile cooler advice
When I ran lm-sensors through KSensors back on FC3 (yes, that long ago :embarrassed:) the voltage readings were all over the place, but the temp readings always looked about right...
Re: More low profile cooler advice
I just prefer to run lm-sensors from the command line as it is really quick and easy even though I'm not really a command line person.
In addition to the KDE suggestions mentioned, for Gnome desktop, there is a nice applet called Gnome Sensors Applet (http://sensors-applet.sourceforge.net/), the package name is called "sensors-applet" in Ubuntu.
Re: More low profile cooler advice
I removed the drive tray as it was reducing the cooling efficiency of the 120MM fan and have suspended the hard drive vertically using some Velcro straps.
With an 80MM exhaust fan(which has been slowed down) and the case on the system is hitting 43C to 45C at idle under Windows XP.
The system is relatively noisy still so I will have to muck around with using a quieter exhaust fan.
Re: More low profile cooler advice
ATM, there is a huge mess of cables at the front of the case. My case modifications seems to have the subtlety of a Moose!

With some web browsing the CPU is hitting 47C to 48C. The Antec Tri-Cool fan is at its maximum setting though.
Re: More low profile cooler advice
CAT, what happened with this? You got a picture of the finished setup?
Big fan and little heatsink is a bad combination I think.

The project was done on a shoe string budget so I used whatever I had lying around.
Anyway, the project has stood at that point for a while now. At some point if I have the money I will get hold of a better cooler and perhaps a new PSU.
Re: More low profile cooler advice
I am back ( after a month - been busy with final year postgrad project )....
I got hold of a FREE case with motherboard of a Shuttle XPC SB83G5
http://www.shuttle.eu/_archive/older...sb83g5_3d6.jpg
Now, I intend to give this to my Mom so that she can use it in her office to replace one of the now dead PC's.
The specs I am looking at is :
P4 3GHz
2 X 512 MB DDR1 RAM
SATA DVDRW
SATA 2.5" 80GB HDD ( Can use a 3.5" ATA if space suffices )
500W Shuttle PSU
Now, the problem I am facing with is the HSF. I bought one from eBay but it's longer than the one I need and can't fit it!
http://www.shuttle.eu/_archive/older...sb83g5_ice.jpg
I bought a Zalman CNPS8000 but the holes don't align. The motherboard's hole are much closer. :wallbash:
http://itfanat.com/images2/zalman-cn...pu-wagon-2.jpg
The right Shuttle HSF costs £45ish , which is just too expensive.
Not too sure about the Zalman VF2000 or the Akasa Evo
Any tips?
Re: More low profile cooler advice
Just measured the HSF holes.
7.5 cm between one set and 6cm between the other. ????
Re: More low profile cooler advice
I sent an e-mail to IEI to see if they have a Core2 compatible BIOS for the motherboard - if not I will probably ditch it. ATM,it will cost me around £60 to £70 for another motherboard! :censored:

The mini-ITX motherboard I am using is made by IEI. If I can use a Core2 processor than the system will be much easier to cool and faster.
Re: More low profile cooler advice
Ah right, sorry. Fail on my behalf - I looked at the title and the last few posts and assumed it was only about heatsinks. :(
