    Which am3 chipset?

    Couple of questions

This is going to be for a general usage pc, internet and dvd watching not gameing
    matx only

So I have been looking at an AthlonII x2 245 & 785g+710sb motherboard, probably the MSI 785GM-E51

However i just spotted there's the new 880g chipset.
Also side port memory how much difference would that make? is it worth an extra £10?
    How about the nvidia 8200?
    or the 760g?

    Re: Which am3 chipset?

The SB850 southbridge and recent Samsung F3 drives seem to have issues it seems. Samsung has released a firmware update for affected drives though. However I had recommended an 870 based motherboard with an F3 hard drive earlier this week so it was very embarrassing when the drive had issues!

Some of the cheaper 880G motherboards lack the SB850 southbridge and instead have the SB710.

The 760G lacks UVD so I would go for the 780G,785G,790GX,880G or 890GX motherboards as the IGPs they contain have UVD or UVD2. UVD and UVD2 will helpful for decoding HD media.

The 780G and 790GX have the DX10 HD3000 series IGP with 40 stream processors and UVD. The 785G,880G and 890GX have the DX10.1 HD4000 series IGP with 40 stream processors,UVD2 and lower power consumption.

The 790GX motherboards have the SB750 southbridge which has additional RAID options over the SB710 southbridge found in the 785G and some 780G motherboards. The SB850 southbridge in the 890GX and 880G motherboards has native SATA 3.0 support.

Sideport memory does improve performance in games especially if it is DDR3 RAM.

This 790GX based motherboard has sideport RAM for £61:

This 785G based motherboard has sideport RAM for £69:

The MSI motherboard you have mentioned is meant to be quite power efficient:

The Athlon II X3 435 is also worth a look at too and you maybe able to unlock this if you are lucky.

BTW, there is the 25W Athlon II X2 250U which runs at 1.6GHZ which you can get too.

    Re: Which am3 chipset?

I was also looking at this one CAT
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Biost...-RAID-mATX-VGA

The 880g only have a 710sb is not so bad as there's been rumers that amd disabled the unlocking on the 850sb
Oh and it also has USB3 support as well as sata3

The question is side port memory worth another £12?

Oh and ddr3 vs ddr2, aka amd2+ vs am3 ?? both the motherboard cost a bit more and the memory is more.

    Re: Which am3 chipset?

Some of the 880G motherboards have the SB850 southbridge and only ones with this southbridge have SATA 3.0 as the SB850 supports six SATA 3.0 ports natively.

Core unlocking on Asus motherboards with the SB850 southbridge is still functional as one of my friends unlocked an X3 435 to 2.9GHZ Phenom II X4 with an Asus M4A87TD EVO in the last week!

I assume that socket AM3 motherboards with the newer chipset will have a good chance of being able to run AMD Bulldozer. However since this a web browsing build this probably is not much of a concern on your part!

Here are some articles comparing DDR2 and DDR3 with the Phenom II processors:

    http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/17...nce/index.html

    http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/CPU/...-vs.-DDR2.html

TBH, a DDR2 based build AM2+ build should be fine and you will even have compatibility with the Phenom II X6 so there is a decent upgrade path still IMHO!
