Optical in sound card..

Would I be able to use a soundcard with optical in (something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Sou.../ref=de_a_smtd)

So that I can get 5.1 surround sound from my PS3?

The problem I have is that my surround speakers are made by logitech, and work great on the pc but I can only "emulate" the surround sound on the PS3 (currently hooked up with stereo sound).

I looked into this a while ago and from what I found, people just couldn't get it to work properly (stereo only even when using S/PDIF was the most common problem) so if you do test it out be sure to give an update.

Don't think I'm gonna waste the money just to test it tbh

I did read somewhere something like it might only work in stereo because the decoders aren't allowed to decode DTS or dolby or something along the lines of that anyway.

Don't you need something like an AV receiver? Then you just have your PC and PS3 as inputs going into it, and your surround speakers as output.

Like an amp? I guess you could but I don't think they're compatible with the "PC Speakers" cos you have seperate inputs for the center speaker/sides/rear/sub (maybe not one for the sub, can't remember..).

AFAIK amps will just take input from stereo, or optical connections and stuff like that... but not the pc connectors..

Yeah I suspect you'd probably have to swap out to proper speakers, and a proper receiver. Not cheap, but at least it would work.

I know with my old Creative 5.1 system a lot of the electronics were build into the subwoofer, so there was no way it would've been compatible with an AV receiver.

I'm in agreement with you tbh - there's no way I'd throw money at a solution like that on the off-chance that it *might* work.
