    Re: New gaming rig ...

The HD5850 1GB when at the same clockspeeds as the HD5870 1GB is very similar in performance. AFAIK, both the HD5850 1GB and HD5870 1GB can be overclocked a similar amount. The HD5870 1GB does consume more power than an HD5850 1GB with the same die area so it will need better cooling during overclocking than an HD5850 1GB. Even if you got an HD5850 1GB for £250 and an HD5870 for £300 at the same clockspeeds the HD5870 1GB would not be 20% faster from what I have read.

However, I have seen the HD5870 1GB sometimes below £300 so it might be worth looking around for cheaper one unless of course you want a version which has fancy cooling.

With regards to water cooling the GPU I cannot say whether it would be worth the effort TBH.

Have you considered a water cooling system such as the Corsair H50 or something similar?? For the sort of smaller overclocks you are thinking about such a system would do the trick IMHO.

    Re: New gaming rig ...

I concur with CAT on the H50; I will easily cope with the overclocks you are thinking of, so the other water cooling kit is really just extra cost and maintenance.

However, if you just want to watercool as a technical exercise go for it - it's really rewarding when you get it right!

    Re: New gaming rig ...

I agree with pretty much all of CAT's sugestions, execpt one
The fortress 02, nice case, however not that great for water cooling.
You can sit a 360rad on top of the bottom 180m fans but it's not really an ideal layout.

Case is a tough thing, esp with water cooling if you don't want to do much modding.
The Corsair 800d is probably the best out-of-the-box case for water cooling.

If you're willing to spend that sort of money and don't mind a spot of modding then you're pretty much open to any case.

EDIT:going for a Corsair H50 or CoolIT Eco (I'd also look at that one for a good all in one cpu loop) Then I'd look away from the Corsair 800d as it's not that good as a stright air cooled case.
The Silverstone Fortress 2 or Raven 2 would be good for this type of all in one loop, but at the same time so are most other cases.

Must admit I prefur to go smaller, you don't need a massive case if all you're sticking in it are a couple of hard drives.

I'd Look at the LanCool (Lian-Li's steel versions) K58, or the special edition K62 (red&black) or the Lian Li PC-P50 if you want aluminium

    Re: New gaming rig ...

Mmm.... I guess I'll have to decide whatever I want to do a full WC setup or go on air. It's just that I thought having a WC system would be quite interesting - but it does cost quite a bit of money, and if as you say I can manage a reasonable overclock with a H50 then I guess I'll go that route.

For an air cooled system a FT02 looks quite nice, the only concern that I have is space for possible future upgrades, as I think a 5870 can just about fit in it (without removing the bottom fans).

    Re: New gaming rig ...

If you want to fit HD5970 you will need to remove one of the bottom fans:

    http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m...e=1&print=true

However, if you use a Scythe Slip Stream Slim 120MM you can still have a cooling fan beneath the graphics card:

I would go with this cheaper Intel SSD:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/80GB-...ite-70MB-s-OEM

The OCZ Vertex 2 drives are fast but are overpriced IMHO.

Thats true - the Vertex 2 drives are certainly overpriced at the moment. However, I won't be ordering this stuff until July, and I'm hoping the prices might come down slightly (not likely..). If not, I'll get a cheaper Intel SSD as you suggested .

I'll also need a data disk (500GB, relatively fast), as well as a backup disk (about 2TB)? Any recommendations - how about a SpinPoint F3 for both?

Also, how do you thank people in the forum? I don't see a "Thank" button ....

Yeah I'd go for the Samsungs for both, would be fine. If you're getting a backup disk though, I'd recommend an external caddy if you don't have one already. Something like the Sharkoon QuickPort SATA.

If you've got it internally in the PC and the power supply goes bang, or you get some malware that starts randomly deleting files, that'll be the end of your backup. External is always best.

Yeah - I understand your point regarding backups. I already have an exteral 1TB disk for important stuff - you can never have too many backups

Sorry to ask so many questions - but what graphics manufactorer do people recommend, in terms of quality, return policy, customer service, as well as overlocking tools, etc. Asus? Sapphire? XFX?

    Re: New gaming rig ...

EVGA, Sapphire are probably the highly regarded ones, XFX being the worse round these parts.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Not much choice in terms of ATI.

Overclocking is now incorporated into drivers straight from ATI. All ATI manufacturers are fine apart from XFX imho.
