I appreciate it. But you're right, Derby is a tad far. Mind you I should visit - apparently the family roots are from there.

Get the cable tested for free at Maplin. If faulty, max £25 for a new power brick on the net!

You can get DC sockets fixed for about £70. Normally places charge £15 for collect and return
and if they can't fix it thats all you lose.

Re: Wife's laptop - not charging

Heres some, I cant vouch for any though, I think they are probably much of a muchness in general.

http://www.repairs-direct.com/ £69.99 all in (for collect and return & part & labour etc)
http://www.thelaptopspecialist.co.uk/ not really sure on the prices its not that clear
http://www.acesupport.co.uk/store/ £59.99 but not sure about pick up and return cost again not that clear.
http://www.laptoprepairspecialist.co.uk/ £75 all in it seems
http://www.cambridgelaptoprepair.co....ack-repair.htm I have no idea how much they charge

Re: Wife's laptop - not charging

Shops around here charge £70-£80 for DC jack repair inc. DC jack if required.

I charge £75 inc. for DC Jack repairs but I'm in Devon.

Charging problems are usually down to the DC jack being loose or a pin inside snapped / faulty AC adaptor or sometimes the worst - charging circuit on the motherboard which cannot be replaced without swapping the motherboard out.

It does sound like dry solder joints on the DC jack or the AC adaptor has gone bad, hopefully the latter though.

It's only an expensive job because it takes an hour to complete if your quick or two hours if you have to read the service manual to take it apart etc.

You can determine if it's the AC adaptor with a multimetre and also you can tell if its the DC jack (usually) with the metre too if you had one, continuity testing each joint.

    Good luck with it.
