Wife's laptop - not charging
There's power to the brick (green LED) but when plugged into the laptop....nothing. I'm assuming that the power connection inside the laptop has broken. Probably just a simple soldering job, but I know nothing about soldering, or much about the inside of a laptop.
(It still boots and runs A-OK. 17min batt remaining).
Does anyone know a reputable laptop repairer in Kent / East Sussex ? Otherwise it's PCW. <shudder> :help:

Might be the connector at the end of the power brick that plugs into the laptop. Just because you have a green light doesn't mean the power brick is 100% working. The end wires inside the connector may be dislodged etc etc. Maplin will test that for you for free as they have done that for me. Might just mean a new power brick! Worth a try.

Good idea. I'll try that.
More likely ham-fisted son though. He's got form in the 'forcing connectors' department. :)

Re: Wife's laptop - not charging
hey phage,
first thing to do would be try finding someone with same laptop/charger and use their charger, see if it's the laptop or the charger that's faulty. if its the charger, best to just buy a new one. if it's the laptop, RMA it if it's under warranty, otherwise ...
Re: Wife's laptop - not charging
Or a connector with the same plug and rating, doesn't have to be exactly the same.
Have you tried removing the battery, plugging it in and seeing it it will start up on just the power brick?
Worth trying as it could be an issue with the power regulation on the motherboard or a static build up inside the battery.
Make sure there's no damage to ether connector, ether on the laptop or power brick.
You can test the brick with a multimeter if you have one, personal experience having the wire bent at the connector end can damage it, as can being stood on.
I've not tried replacing the power connector on a laptop before, I doubt my soldiering skills are up to that.
It may mean a replacement motherboard, in which case it's probably better to get a new laptop.
ps I take it the laptop is out of warranty? the cost of laptop repairs is the main reason that I support the added expense of an extended warranty on laptops.

Warrant is long gone I'm afraid and I'll ask around. My work machine is a Thinkpad so no luck there :(

Done that as far as I can. No apparent damage.

Yes, I'm afraid so. Data was backed up fairly recently too. I'd be completely hacked off if something as simple as this couldn't be fixed though. Everything else works just fine. :(
Re: Wife\'s laptop - not charging
yeh same plug/connector but generally that means the same charger! i know dell use the same charger for most of their laptops
laptops are frustrating like that, as PC people we naturally feel we can fix stuff but laptops remain a black art
Re: Wife\'s laptop - not charging
Have you had the connector checked / tested as i mentioned?
Re: Wife\'s laptop - not charging

Oh....the connector...Yes, done that. Get some flickering of the charging LED, but can't get it to stay.:angst:
Re: Wife's laptop - not charging
personally i would take it apart and resolder the connections
Re: Wife's laptop - not charging
No soldering iron, or any idea how to do that. Otherwise I would !
Re: Wife's laptop - not charging
thing is it will cost about £130 to get it fixed :(
