    HELP! My laptop has died.

    Hi everyone,

I was hoping you could help with my laptop.

Basically, last night it was working fine, last thing I did was install avg free in Windows XP. Then I turned it off.

This morning it went to the BSOD when booting up. I had a look in the bios and next to primary (drive) it says 40001mb (i.e., the size of the hard drive in there) - so I assume it can see the drive.

However, when I go into the windows recovery console and type 'map', it only shows the CDROM drive - no C: drive at all. So i can't do checkdisk or anything like that. The C: drive doesn't seem to show in the recovery console, or indeed anywhere outside the bios (where I'm sure it said the name of the drive before, not just the size.)

Any ideas about what might be going wrong? Failed drive perhaps?

    Thanks in advance.

    Tim

Chances are HDD, use a live usb or cd of puppy linux, and see if you can mount the drives and
view the files. I've had a lot of luck getting data off drives which cant be seen in windows that way.

Problem is yours isnt seen in the bios.

I would suggest to find a working version of your HDD and swap the electronics board over if
you want to get the data back cheaply.

I'm not actually worried about getting the data off - I just want it to work!

Would it not being showing in the bios cos it's completely buggered?

Is the hard drive a sata one? if so it might be set to AHCI mode in the BIOS, in which case the BIOS will see it but windows XP boot cd will not see it.

Normally when its not seen in the bios its kaputski. Try linux and then if that dont work
give up and get a new one.

Nope, linux didn't see it either. Guess it's just gone and died. Random as it didn't show any signs of going wrong!

I was thinking about putting one of those IDE to CF adapters in instead, then just chucking a 16gb CF card in there. Any advice/suggestions on that? Good/bad idea? a direct replacement of the one that's in there now is about £75...
