    Watercooling?

I like my rig quiet, hence my underclocking my gfx so I can run the fan on it at 20% all the time, thing is I can still hear the fans, all drives (bar optical} are SSD, so next is watercooling I would of thought..

    Any suggestions?
Case is an Antec Mini P180 so would be looking at external rad/res I would of thought although there is a fair amount of space free.
I currently have the SSD's in the top 3.5" bays and my optical in the top one of the bottom two 5.25" bays although that could be moved to the actual top 5.25" bay to free up space where the bottom 3.5" trays and bottom 5.25" rails are if needs be.
CPU is a Q6600 and GFX is a Sapphire Toxic VapourX 4870 thing.

I'm not looking for overclocking etc as the rig itself is fast enough even with the gfx underclocked and fan at 20% but I was less noise..

Not to be so blunt but have you tried turning your speakers up a bit, I really dont get the hole my PC is to loud thing, teach your mind not to concentrate on it and BINGO!.

If it really does bother you tho, which it seems with you underclocking, then go for watercooling, but when you work out the total cost I feel its not really worth it.

    Re: Watercooling?

    Which fans can you hear?

You'll still use fans when you switch to watercooling (in most circumstances), so definitely worth thinking about before you commit as it's not that cheap to make the jump

water cooling = pump noise, consider that b4 you think it will make your rig silent

i just spend a fair chunk of cash to control pump and fan speeds depending on temp, its a lot quieter but there is still noise.

    Re: Watercooling?

Main fan I can hear is the CPU one, the case has an 80 on the back and an, erm big one on the top, I wonder if I could remove the CPU can and see if the air from the 2 case fans keeps things cool enough.
atm the CPU is sitting at 36/37/30/35 and the gpu is 49oc...

What HSF are you using on the CPU? Could you just swap out the fan for something bigger and/or quieter?

    Re: Watercooling?

    Doesn't help much!

But if you can change the fan out there are plenty of quiet/low speed fans out there, or you could just get a cheap fan controller. I've got something similar to this on my HTPC which quiets down the fan nicely.

    Re: Watercooling?

Maybe this is the owl thing? The Noctua NH-U12 ("noctua" is latin for owl, btw)? You could really try to run this passive, or at least with some low-RPM (Scythe's or Noctua's fans are available as low as 500RPM) fans.

By the way, are your case fans screwed to the case or suspended on rubber mounts such as these? They help a LOT.

    Re: Watercooling?

That looks like the fella, only with a single fan..
It has rubber strips between the fan and the heatsink and the rest of the fans are screwed straight in, stopped the fan yb hand lastnite and its deffo that one thats the loudest, the fan is only running at ~1300rpm and connected to the motherboard so is being controlled by the BIOS...

I'll take it off later and see how the temps fair with just the two case fans in there..

    Re: Watercooling?

i would toss a 140mm noctua on there as it has 120mm fixings, put the ultra low speed cable on and your good to go !

    Re: Watercooling?

I get no 'pump noise' at all - all you need do is stick the pump on a block of foam or special anti-vibration material and presto, no noise. I have a block of 'gel' like stuff I bought for this purpose but a thick chunk of foam (1-2inches) will do much the same job.

    Re: Watercooling?

Yeah, that's an U12 - a VERY good heatsink, I don't think you should change it.

First, mount all your fans on those rubber mountings I've shown - it managed to eliminate resonant vibrations in my Sonata Plus, a noticeable difference for a few pounds. I can't recommend those highly enough!

Secondly, if your CPU runs too hot passive - which it might, knowing you have a Q6600 - then slap something rotating very slowly, or, if the temps are too high yet - something spinning a bit faster. Of course, an 800RPM Slip Stream would be a better "faster" choice, I can't find it atm.

    Re: Watercooling?

Have disco'd the fan atm, CPU sat at 42/43/34/39, gpu at 50..
Gonna fire up a bit of CS:S in a mo and keep an eye on the temps...
