    Needing a PC case

    Hi,

I've got all my components together ready for a new build but have yet to find a good case as I'm giving away my old PC with its case (NZXT Hush).

I'm quite particular when it comes to cases as I'm trying to offer one that would output the least noise but provide the best cooling.

The only case I've seen that seems to meet the above 2 criteria is a Silverstone case http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=7&subcat=1092

This case comes in 3 varieties - black without side window, black with side window and black and red with side window. Now, I'm not to keen on the red so I'd be looking at the all black 2 cases but what I'd like to know is would a side window make a difference to the noise output?

Does anyone have any better recommendations that could provide better cooling and possibly reduce noise even more?

    Thanks

    Re: Needing a PC case

It would probably not make a huge difference, but it does mean that you would be unable to line the case with any kind of noise damping material such as this:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Acous...r-All-PC-Cases
Which could well make a difference.

I see. Have you (or anyone else) got any personal experience of this padding and its effectiveness or the mentioned case even?

Don't the FT02 cases already come with padding ?

I have never used it, just heard about it, but saman_gh, you are correct a quick look at the silverstone site shows that it does have "Foam padded interior for advanced noise absorption"

    Re: Needing a PC case

I have the original Silverstone fortress FT01 without window. It came complete with the acoustic foam for noise attenuation. The case is still available, is cheaper and a good choice for a quiet build. I would still go with this case over the FT02 because I don't care for the 90 degree motherboard rotation designs based on my experience with the Raven RV02.

    Others to consider would be
Lian Li PC-B25S (although I can't find any for sale yet even though it was announced ages ago)
    Fractal R2 Define

Ok I'm not sure if I like the Fractal looks blander than the Silverstone but wondering which is quieter also, I've never heard of the brand Fractal.

When you say about the 90 degree motherboard rotation from personal experience what was so bad about it? Also, you said you've had a Raven RV02 aren't the Raven cases supposed to provide good noise reduction? If so, what was your experience (noise-wise) with the Raven case?

    Re: Needing a PC case

Fractal has a very good reputation among quiet cases. Bittech did a review a while back, but with their extra-hot hardware, it run warm, but if you use all the available fan bays with low rpm dampened fans its cooling should be as good as any:

    Re: Needing a PC case

Thank you Skulltrail I'll take a look. Might be a problem for me now if I decide I like the case as I'll have 2 to pick from rather than having 1 but not sure on it and I don't like making decisions

Oh and is it true that the larger the fan size the less spinning it has to do to cool the hardware - making it quieter?

    Re: Needing a PC case

With a conventional case you can simply pull it forward to improve access when it is located under a desk. With a 90 degree rotation design I find access to be a pain because you can't do anything to improve the access. The clearance between the top of the case and under side of the desk is a constant which I find frustrating. The cables have to feed from the rear first then bend 90 degrees onto the connections which I find more difficult. The novelty of banging my head on the underside of my desk has worn off.

The Raven RV02 is not as quiet as the Fortress FT01. The Fortress FT01 is one of the few cases I think combines good airflow with low noise characteristics.

A larger fan can spin slower and still produce the same cfm (essentially airflow) as a faster spinning smaller fan. Generally speaking slower rotation makes for quieter running, although vibrations also play a part which can be reduced by rubber pins and other dampening. Akasa Apaches are generally considered the best balance between noise and performance for 120mm and Fractals 140mm is very good in the 140mm class.

Yes, but a 120mm fan spinning at 1000RPM will make more noise than an 80mm fan spinning at same RPM. Overall the noise to airflow ratio is better for the 120mm, but still wanted to make a note

    Re: Needing a PC case

Yes, novelty is something that I don't subject myself to hence why I refuse to get an iPhone .
My PC is placed on top of my desk about 1 metre away from my ear (probably why I find my current/old build quite noisy). So since my PC resides on top of my desk would this 90 degree feature be an issue for me? Also, is there any difference between the FT01 and FT02 apart from the motherboard feature and price?

Right okay think I'll put it to a vote then.

If price wasn't the issue would you go for the Silverstone TF02 or Fractal R2?
