    What Printer to buy?

It seems that my HP Deskjet 3920 has decided to give up, so I'm on the lookout for a new printer.

I don't seem to print that often, and I'd prefer to be able to buy compatible inks to keep the cost down - compatible inks for the 3920 were only costing me something like £8.50 for 1 colour + £7.50 for 1 black (cartridges though, not syringes where you fill them yourself), I'm also thinking the option of it having a scanner built in would be nice since my old CanoScan LiDE 20 isn't supported in Windows 7.

Thank You in advance for any advice anyone can offer

    Re: What Printer to buy?

Thanks, a quick search on Amazon seems to show a Marketplace seller on Amazon selling a set of 5 compatible ink cartridges for it for £16 delivered (which sounds pretty good to me), but I've seen people mention that for infrequent printing, inkjets are a bad idea as the ink tends to dry out.

Is this true, and if so what would I be able to do to combat it?

You mentioned that you have a couple of those at work, but wouldn't it be a bit overkill for my needs then, and be better for me to go for a cheaper option (though obviously as mentioned in my original post, I have no idea what that could be)?

    Thanks.

(More suggestions for other printers are welcome from anyone else too, as I'd assume that not everyone would recommend it, and I'd prefer to have more than one option to choose from )

    Re: What Printer to buy?

Iirc laser printers shouldn't/can't dry out.

I know it will most definitely be overkill for what you need,+ no scanner ,but you might as well consider it :http://www.ijtdirect.co.uk/?sct=dell1320cn It should last you a long time. Don't be put off by the high cost of the replacement toner as it will last, but tbh when it runs out it would be cheaper to re buy the printer (assuming the same deal is available with the toners)

    Re: What Printer to buy?

True, it does sound really tempting since it should last a really long time - plus someone mentioned on HUKD (as the deal seems to have been posted on there earlier) that according to service tags when they last bought one from there, it comes with a Dell 2 Year NBD Onsite warranty worth £70 (edit: though the graphic on the site indicates 12 months, so it might be different for this one I guess), though if it goes wrong are they likely to honour it if it's been using compatible toner like what is supplied with this deal?

EDIT: I decided to go for it since there's no saying the deal will last long before they're all gone.

    Re: What Printer to buy?

There are many printers to buy in the market and at times you may get confused no to which printer you should buy. It is always best to do some initial analysis about which printer have good reviews with number of print pages, cost of cartridges and other features. You can opt for Canon, Epson and many others, and about the inkjet cartridges and laser toner cartridges you can get remanufactured inkjet cartridges and laser toner cartridges that are cheap and also eco friendly.

    Re: What Printer to buy?

The IJT deal has been on for ages, received my dell printter about a month ago. The printers are refurb, and come with 2 sets of IJT compatible toners, I assume the warrenty is 12 months with IJT. The printer comes with no starter carts just the refilled IJT ones, very happy with my one, print quality is great, and should be enough toner to keep with going for a few years. My setup is the dell above (think its rebadged samsung), and a epson pixma for photos, I run the pixma on original inks, have had problms with remanufactured ink (not toner) in the past, and had bad fading.

    Re: What Printer to buy?

Ah, I see - I got the impression that it's only every couple of months or so due to the previous hot deal for it was 2 months ago.

According to this, the 1320c uses the same Fuji-Xerox engine as the Xerox Phaser 6130/N, so I'd assume the cn variant does too.

Anyway, good to hear that I haven't made a mistake in deciding to buy it

    Re: What Printer to buy?

If you want a an example of the print quality I can do a print for you. Initial setup is interesting, you have to pull tags from bits, etc. There is probably getting started guide on the website

Thanks for the offer, but that won't be necessary - thanks for the warning on initial setup too

    Re: What Printer to buy?

Printer has just arrived - what has surprised me is that the 2 sets of toner supplied are Dell ones not the IJT compatible ones like I'd assumed, and entering the Service Tag on the Dell website shows it has 2 Years Next Business Day warranty.

Maybe the deal has changed since Flibb bought his.

I must admit that the way I read that advert, I assumed it would be dell toners not compatibles, and if I'd ordered and compatibles arrived, I'd have sent the whole thing back, and been very annoyed.

I seem to remember looking at this deal a few months ago, perhaps when Flibb bought his, and from memory, that did specify compatibles, because I thought about it and that, unless my memory is playing me up, is one of two reasons why I didn't go for it. So if I bought now because it said Dell toners and they weren't, I'd have been very peeved indeed.

All I need now is a version of that machine with built-in duplexing, and still at that price, and I'm sorted.

Well, part of the reason I'd assumed it was other than Flibb's post, some on HUKD also mentioned that when they'd bought it previously it had come with compatibles not originals.

EDIT: Technically according to the Dell site mine's got about 21/22 months warranty as it started from April (so I'm guessing it started from when IJT bought the printer from Dell).
