    Netbook Choices...

OK, I'm looking for a netbook and I'm not really clued up on these (never bought a laptop before). I'll be using it mainly for general web surfing around the house and watching the odd film whilst on trains and planes etc.

    My requirements are:
    - Minimum of 10" screen (would consider 11")
    - Usable screen resolution i.e. 1024*768 upwards (seen some with 1366*768!)
    - Decent battery life
    - Ability to play flash movies and avi files
    - Roughly £250 (would consider second hand)

I've been looking at the Dell 11z and Mini 10 (1012) so far...

    Any help/advice would be appreciated?

mini 10, ebuyer on eBay, £220 delivered - you can't beat it for the money, I got one for the brother's gf's birthday and she loves it.

Battery life is ~ 9 hours iirc and it's even got the HP quickstart (pre windows) if you're after a quick browse or check of the emails. Capable of HD output too.

Acer Aspire One 751. 11" 1366x768 screen, Atom Z-series, GMA500 (which is based on Imagination Technologies IP and is considerably more interesting than GMA950 ). Available from Scan for £228, with 3G embedded - although that's a pre-order price... Otherwise it's about £250 from a variety of stores, just google it

Cheers, has been looking at the mini 10 but its only £30 more for an 11z off eBay.

Anyone else got any other suggestions that Dell? I'd prefer the newer Atom chipset (N450) due to the better video playback etc.

That looks like a decent shout, although the CPU is pretty weak and from reading reviews it struggles quite a bit.

Hmm, its harder than I thought to find a netbook that has everything I want without compromising!

I am sort of shopping for a *cheap* netbook (under £200 delivered). Until today, I've not really looked into Dell. How do they compare to the Samsung offering?

    Re: Netbook Choices...

n450 is only better on battery life, mine is no better than older netbooks. Make sure its not set to 50% on battery, or it will crawl.

    ASUS Eee PC 1001P

    Toshiba NB305

As someone said, newer processors are just more power efficient. Doesn't mean they have more power. But you need to see if the laptop manufacturer gave you a good battery anyways.

Watch out, Asus always make UK versions with inferior capacity batteries and usually without the nicer keyboards.

That's a good point but I think that is same for other brands though if we compare US vs EU versions

Vote for the Samsung N220 here, althought if you want something a bit harder wearing the NB30 is pretty much the same thing but a bit more ruggedised.
