    Re: CHALLENGE: Cheapest possible build

That 400w PSU recommended by Skulltrail would be ideal, never use cheap PSUs no matter what the budget is, always check reviews (and check for load testing and oscilloscope measurements - reviews that just plug it into a PC and say it works are pointless) or ask on here for example if you're unsure. Also as for RAM, prices have really shot up recently to about double what they were - you should be able to find a much better deal if you ask on the wanted section of these forums (once you reach 100 posts) as people who are upgrading to DDR3 systems often sell their DDR2 on here

    A bit, but not much:
    2GB DDR3-1333 kit ~ £44.
    MSI 760G AM3 / DDR3 motherboard ~ £40
Add an Athlon II X2 240 for £46 and you're looking at £130, as opposed to £115 for the Sapphire motherboard / DDR2 / Athlon II X2 240.

    Probably worth it, tbh.

    Re: CHALLENGE: Cheapest possible build

If you can grab some second hand DDR2 though, off the classifieds/wanted forums on here, that could work out well since the prices have risen so much over the last 12 months or so - I've bought 4GB of DDR2 for £40 and 1GB for around £15 in the past.

Off eBay or somewhere though, you won't get those kind of prices.

    Re: CHALLENGE: Cheapest possible build

Yeah, there's generally no difference except for less expansion slots.

Even mini-itx doesn't vary, although occasionally they use laptop RAM instead of normal RAM.

there is no max budget realy, just looking cheapest possible upgrade which is capable of gamming

So do you think there is anything I can keep in that spec? I wouldnt have thought so.
Depends on the games being played, but it strikes me that the graphics card in that existing machine is the bottleneck, and just updating the 6600 would give that system one hell of a boost.

    Re: CHALLENGE: Cheapest possible build

What clock speed is a 3000+? You really need ~ 2.4GHz minimum from an Athlon 64 to get reasonable framerates in modern games, and of course the more recent the game the better use it makes of multiple cores...

Also you'd want another 512MB of RAM at least, and DDR isn't exactly cheap nowadays...

    Re: CHALLENGE: Cheapest possible build

Ive been thinking about the PSU. I got my bro to tell me what he has and its 500w. However it appears to be an ebuyer PSU, without being able to look at it I cant say much more than that.

Did a quick search but couldnt find an ebuyer psu. is anyone aware of it?

    Re: CHALLENGE: Cheapest possible build

    Just don't

It's really not worth the £5-10 you'll save. Get yourself a decent make, like Enermax, Corsair, Seasonic, OCZ, so on - you get the idea. A 400W unit won't cost a lot at all.

If you want to game then don't get the cheapest possible - you'll always regret it in a years time. Get the best you can afford, so set yourself a budget first.
