Intresting, although it only seem to happen on very high overclocks when you need to feed it a lot of voltage.
But at the same time that's not good contact.

My policy will be to check the socket mounts from now on and return it within the 30 days if it's a Foxconn socket, citing the non-spectification of the socket as "not built for purpose." This is regardless if I intend to overclock or not, because my understanding is it could do damage to a CPU even at stock speeds.

It's nothing to do with how you mount them - if the socket is poorly built then it's poorly built, nothing you can do about it.

Good luck to those trying to determine who a socket is made by in advance! Foxconn are huge players, in the end they've got to sort this out because it's not feasible to avoid them.

You can look at the backplate of the board through... as I did with the new MSI P55 we have. Fortunatly it a LONE socket.

They don't really, it's etched into the socket backplate by LONE or FOXCONN. Obviously to try and give their names visablity.

Does anyone know if the gd80 is affected? Dont really want to have to take the entire rig apart to check but if no one knows then i'm in for a fun night!

They've said basicly there is a 50/50 chance. All I can say is check the backplate.

I assume my GD-65 is Foxconn as the CPU socket protector had Foxconn on it :/

As I said in my post, you can try the "fit for purpose" card with your supplier, but some of them may not have it. Even through legally they should allow you to return the product, they may not actually believe that there is a problem that justifies such a return to be made.

Failing that, I recommend dismounting your heatsink, and checking your CPU to make sure all the pins are in contact. If they aren't, you can then play the "faulty product" card with your supplier and provide photographic evidence.

TY, i think the force is with me tbh anyway il probably check next week, however my skills at noticing then counting pin contact evidence is most probably lacking

Technically speaking, manufactures don't cover it if you overclock it. But in practice they don't ask, and you don't tell. But as I said, this is a "fit for purpose" thing, not a warrenty thing. Legally, even if you don't have the warrenty, you have a product with a design fault that cannot achieve it's intended design purpose, therefore you should be entitled to a replacement or refund under the trading act.

If you fully read the artical you'll spot that the back plates and not always by the same manufactor as the socket.

If you find yourself shopping for an EVGA P55 FTW, model E657, you've got a 50/50 chance of buying one with a Tyco AMP socket design (using a LOTES backplate), as opposed to one made solely with Foxconn's, the same goes for MSI and DFI who have batches of boards in the retail channel using LOTES sockets (although we're not entirely sure on socket specifics at this point). DFI told us earlier they have dropped usage of the Foxconn sockets completely until further notice.

While there's no mention of a Foxconn socket with LOTES backplate that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

Best thing to do now is check your pins or pins marks on the cpu.
If you looked at the images the foxconn left a very distinctive 2 points on each contact, where as the LOTES and Tyco AMP left a single mark in the center.

The best chance of getting a non-foxconn socket is to get the more expensive top end models, note best chance not garrantied.
