    New power supply thing?

    Hey,

Please excuse my lack of technical know how, Im pretty new to all this.

The fan on my power supply box has stopped working so my computer keeps cutting off to stop itself overheating. My current power supply is an EZ Cool ATX-450 JSP. I am really just looking to replace it like for like but cant find anywhere that sells them. Can anyone recommend anything similar or where I might be able to find the same model as I have?

Also, are they simple enough to fit? I took it out and opened it up the other day to clean it in a bid to start the fan again but to no avail.

    Thanks for your time.

oh dear....not another EZ Cool. Just dont go there, they are rubbish. Never skimp out on a cheap power supply, you can run the risk of destroying your components if the PSU dies/blows up.

It sounds like you need a new PSU so what are your system specs?

    Re: New power supply thing?

To recommend a PSU, people need to know what it's going to be powering. So, which graphics card, processor, number of hard drives/optical drives/etc. do you have? Also, if you plan on upgrading any of those components, let us know as this may bump your power requirements.

Edit: Also, some idea of the budget would help too.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good

    Re: New power supply thing?

    My system is fairly basic.

    AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2800+ 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM.
    ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card.
I have 2 hard drives. A DVD writer and an obsolete floppy disk drive.

I have no plans to upgrade at the moment as I am going to buy a new system next year. I just want to keep this one going until then. I realise this is pretty much a crap system but its done the job until now.

    Thanks again.

    Re: New power supply thing?

There's a Corsair 400W CX on eBuyer @ £34.55 with free delivery. More expensive than that EZ Cool but at least you'd be going for a proper branded unit.

    Re: New power supply thing?

Corsair don't make power supplies, they are made for corsair by CWT and seasonic (depending on model)
That said the Corsair 400W CX (seasonic) is a beauty and for the price it's very good.

At the same time with that old a pc you'll not need much, ether of these should be fine

    Re: New power supply thing?

Thanks for all the replies :-)

I have just bought the Corsair 400W CX so hopefully that will arrive in the next few days and then I'll have a go at fitting it. If I just match the cables that I am taking out with the same cable on the new power supply then I should be fine.

Would it be OK not to plug in the floppy disk drive to save on power?

    Re: New power supply thing?

Good job. You shouldn't have any trouble installing it, just make sure you double check you've connected the necessary motherboard power cables.

That floppy drive won't make much difference to your power consumption. If you've no intention of using it, you might as well not connect it - you could remove the floppy drive's ribbon cable too whilst you're at it. Might improve your boot time too by a second or so

    PS, welcome to the forums

    Re: New power supply thing?

Actually yes if you don't use the floppy drive any more, just remove it, at least the cable as well as not bothering to plug in the power.

Some motherboard can have boot up issues if a device is plugged in by it's ribbon cable but not powered.

You'll not be dissapointed by the CX400w, I've picked one up for a pc I'm building, I'm very impressed with it, if you later on upgrade and rebuild your pc (at that age almost everything will need replaceing) you'll be able to still use that CX400w as it can still provide more than enough power for a good basic office/internet pc.
