Re: Time for a new PSU

I like to run a PSU with a good bit below full power.

Its seems that most of the new ones are very efficient but I'm not sure that is at full power output.

I also think you will get better longevity from your PSU if you are not knocking the hell out of it .

Yes, to get the rating they are tested at something like 25, 50, 75 and 100 load. Most PSUs are more efficient at full load than massively underloaded.

I wouldn't advocate running a PSU at 120% load, but at the load it's rated for it should be just as long lasting as running it under.

A 520W Seasonic tested by Johnny Guru recently was only 3% less efficient at full power than at 50% power where it was most efficient, so not much of a difference I admit, at low loads it dropped by 3% as well.

Its just a gut feeling but if you are pulling more power from a PSU it's under more stress so a possible shorter life all being equal. I agree it should not make a difference but suspect it will. I've not seen any long term tests.

ahh i see, well ok then looking at those graphs avergaing below 500w with the gpu, lets assume my seasonic is only 85% efficient. Is my psu good enough still?

i need to check the efficiency but from what i gathered, 100% efficiency is the way to go?

Unless they tested with PSUs that are >100% efficient then you're safe (hint: that's not possible)

That would be the way to go! Unfortunately, we've not invented it yet

The highest I've seen is about 91%, so 85% is pretty good.

Re: Time for a new PSU

Just to throw it in there iv become a bit of an Antec fanboi since i got my 750 true power. I just posted in another thread about how much of a bargain they are. BUT Antec seem to have opted for the 80mm front to back fan on their higher end PSUs (with the exception of that daft one designed for P1** cases) which doesn't really do it for me.

Just got 850W modular corsair PSU, seriously impressed with it so far

I was going to get the 750w one from ocuk, but turned out I could get 850w from scan for same price so thought why not

my Seasonic was on its way out

Its a 700w m12 its got an additional small fan where all the cables come out of the psu, it had started to come on as soon as the psu had any load, It was very loud and high pitched

The psu seemed to be hot all the time, and I could hear what I can only explain as sparking from inside the psu, so I figured it was time to get a replacement before it took rest of my system out with it

Didnt think I would be able to get an rma, Because also when the psu had some load the main big fan
would start to clip the fan grill and make a clicking noise, very annoying, so I removed the fan grill

Made me a bit wary about getting seasonic again to be honest, I knew the 850W corsair was quality and not made by seasonic

I believe the Corsair 850w is made by Seasonic (as opposed to CTX for some other Corsair PSUs).

Seasonic PSUs are the dogs danglies. They certainly don't take out the PC with them when they (very rarely) go, unlike the cheap PSUs.
