replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

is there any you guys could recommend to stick in this thing?

my sister had it back from the tec guys today and its still hitting 78c running prim 95 for only 10 mins

looks like they just replaced the heat sink again with the same one that was on there in the first place

    here is the spec
    cpu phenom x3 8550
    3 gig ddr2
    320gb hdd
    nvida 8200 vga
    vista hp1

there is one 4pin fan header inside the case and that's it.

the case is just under 4inc wide so not very big and the fan in it at the moment has just 5mm gap from the side of the case.

Re: replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

Looks to me like the biggest problem is no case airflow - as far as I can see from the piccy there are no fans exhausting out of the case at all?!?

Looks like you've got a couple of spare PCI slots there though, so how about adding something like this to get rid of the hot air from inside the case? It should help a bit. If you're definitely looking for a new cooler then the Freezer 64 LP might be an option, and it uses a bolt-through fitting like the existing cooler - but it is quite long so make sure there's room for it around the CPU socket.

yup the only other fan is a tiny one in the psu so it just gets hoter and hoter untill it just shuts down

tried to point this out to a tech guy over the phone but he was not having none of it, complete retards if u ask me

i think that heat sink is a tad to big tho there's not much clearance around the heat sink

and there is about 3mm gap between the heat sink and the power cable for the cd drive and about the same for the on board gfx.

i know that but i have 2 cheap dual core amd systems here and they dont get know where near that sort of temps running prim for 24hrs straight.

also it cuts out just playing dvds or basic games after a while which is why she sent it back to be fixed in the first place.

well if the tech guys had a look no wonder it came back just as back, you need to take it in and kick off a little as there bloody useless, i have to pickup pc's from them now and again for there mastercare warranty and half the time a blind 3 year old could have fixed the issue!

they seem to be good at running the reinstall cd and thats about it.

Re: replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

Then definitely go for a PCI slot cooler. They're fairly easy to find in places like Maplin, or you could pick one up online, and that'll help vent the hot air out of the case reducing temps.

Another, although more expensive, option would be to replace the CPU with an Athlon X2 or an Athlon II e of some description - the original Phenom has a TDP in the 80-90W region which can't be helping matters.

Though as Gonzo says, the PC is never going to run very cool as it's really not designed for much usage beyond basic web surfing and word processing, so I think you're being a bit harsh on both Acer and the Tech Guys...

Re: replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

it has 2 pci slots but there unusable as the case is not wide enough to fit them in so nothing to fix them to unless i mod the case otherwise the side panel wont fit back on.

also the mobo is flush with the back of the case so you cant even fit them in anyway lol.

the psu in this thing is only 220w max so if the cpu is using half of that on its own that cant be good for the psu.

Re: replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

Do you mean they're low profile PCI slots? If so a slot cooler could be out without modding the case, but they look taller than that to me...?

Most PSUs are more efficient at higher loads, and tbh your motherboard and peripherals are unlikely to pull more than 30-40W all told, so there's almost certainly enough headroom in the PSU - 220W for a PC with integrated graphics is more than enough (I currently run a low profile system with Celeron D and a discrete graphics card on a 200Wish PSU)

Re: replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

the bits at the back id have to remove to even fit them is 3inc long and then there is about a 1inc gap that is covered by the side panel when its on.

the case width is approx 4inc and its 14inc long 10half inc high so not very big.

Re: replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

Before buying a replace ment cooler (if you do) strip it down and get the motherboard out.
The reason is that's not a stock cooler, it looks simular to a stock intel cooler but it's not a stock AMD cooler.
AM2/2+/3 all use the same rectangular hole pattern under the plastic bracket, that looks like it's a square hole pattern, like they've used an intel 775 hole layout, so any cooler designed for AMD only may well not fit.

Do you have a spare molex? and how big is the vent to the side of the IO? you may be able to mount a couple of small fans on that and runn them off a molex.

EDIT: if I remember the case correctly there's a big vent in the side panel right over the cooler, You could try removing the fan from the cooler (held on by 4 screws) flipping it over and putting it back on, so it's sucking air through the heatsink and venting it out of the side of the case, that might help the cooling.

Other than that. modding is probably your best option or if still within warranty/service contract complaining untill you can get a refund/different model replacement.

there is a big vent in the side so i have flipped the fan round and its now venting out the side of the case.

its about 69 70 now at full load so its a bit better.

it is still under warranty so i have left it up to her if she wants to take it back and kick off at them.

Re: replacement heat sink for acer aspire x1300

If it's overheating with the stock cooling then yes "Not fit for purpose" complain.

Intrestingly we've got some of the Acer Veriton X480 (C2D E7500) at work same basic case but a bit longer, running fine, only issue is they've got blue LED hard drive and network activity on the front and they are EXTREMELY bright, I had to use a perminate black marker to dull them to sane levels.
