Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
Anybody know how to get rid of old stuff? I've e-mailed 4 places (they recycle/re-use/rebuild for charity etc.) and had one reply, basically "Gi'us £175 and it's ours"!
I have:
---------------
HP5N Laserjet printer
Epson Stylus Color 400 printer
Simplex DP66 flatbed scanner
Microscan 17" CRT monitor (cable is faulty)
PCI TV card
AMD K6 400MHz base unit
Keyboard and trackball to fit unit above
Epson GT-300 sheet-fed scanner with all docs., software etc.
Sanyo A4 photocopier
AMD stock cooler
Assorted cables
Mice
Software on CDs and floppies
-----------------
Yes, I could take it to the local authority's recycling centre (not personally - it wouldn't fit in the panniers!) and most of it is fit only for scrap or low-level use, but the HP5N is rather nice and it's a pity to scrap it.
Part of the problem is that all these companies are 'somewhere else' - as usual, Northampton seems to be in avoid.
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
Freecycle, to be honest. If people want stuff, they can come and pick it up for free. I wouldn't bother getting rid of stuff under any other terms.
You'll probably be surprised at what people will do to get things when they're free.

Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
Yes, I would advertise it on freecycle. As you say the HP5N printer is worthwhile, and the rest will be useful to someone.
A couple of months I had an old electric cooker to get rid of. It had a missing mains cable so would have needed an electrician to fix it so that it could be installed & used. Despite that when I advertised it on Freecycle, I got about 20 people wanting it.
One thing about freecycle, is that it is mostly done via a mailing list, and you get all kinds of chancers putting wanted posts on the list for stuff they are never likely to get. Like they want a PC monitor, but it must be a flatsceen and at least 20 inches, and it must be a Sony or a Dell.

Stick it all in the FS section for cost of delivery? I'm sure people on here will buy most of it :).
Failing that, charity shop?
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
+1 for freecycle - google it if you don't already use it. People will take anything on there..
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
Put it outside your front door/gate/wall etc, with a great big sign stuck on it saying "free" and it will be gone in about 30 minutes as long as you don't live in the middle of nowhere.
Ahh..."near Northampton"...hmmm

northampton, put a chain round it, gone in 30 seconds!
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
Im in Northampton and Freecycle is a bit naff here, we use Freegle, in Yahoo.

Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
OK, thanks for the suggestions.
I did get rid of a 60 yo boiler (not the missus!) with a 15A plug on it by just putting it outside. A chap wanted it for boiling dog food or dogs or something.
The 17" monitor doesn't work (only the cable) so that's a useless lump nowadays.
I suppose that the printer might go OK.
I looked at Freecycle and saw that this area is also Freegle - Towcester being about the closest (and having a tip).
Reminds me, must put my neighbour's old gas cooker outside when it's fine, then the bikes can go in the shed!
I'll perhaps try Freegle. When the PC stuff has gone there's some fisshing kit to go as well.
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
How come you don't want to sell it? I'm sure if you stipulate "collection only" then people will take it off your hands and even give you some money for it! Someone travelled over 200 miles to collect a cheap door that I was selling so definitely stick it on the classifieds or something if you have the time.
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
True. Could put the more valuable items on ebay for a penny, collection only. They might get bid up to a worthwhile amount.
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
free listing this weekend on ebay!
Re: Bit OT?: Getting rid of old hardware
A laserjet and PCI card for free? Score! How comes you're getting rid of them?

Just old stuff that I don't want any more.
Same with a load of fishing gear.
Then a lot of stationery, but I'll e-mail the local primary school about that.
It all started when I was clearing out the loft and realised how much I'd accumulated over 40 years.
Most of the bike stuff has gone but there's quite a bit to go.

As far as I know PC World will take any old electricals off you, all electronics shops have to offer take backs on all goods they sell on a like for like basis under the WEEE scheme but PC World just take everything.
