New system spec/price feedback!
Going to be putting together a new PC in next few weeks, complete new build as want to leave current one running for backup etc (except do not need keyboard/mouse/speakers). The PC is used purely for gaming/movies.
Looking at getting something like:
Samsung SyncMaster P2450H 1920x1080 £165
Antec 300 £40 + a 120mm fractual fan £7
Now the inside parts, this is just to give a rough idea of intention:
768mb GTX460 £150 or 1GB GTX460 £175
4GB (2x2GB) Corsair XMS3, DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333) Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24 £81
Asus M4A88TD-V EVO £90
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BlackEdition retail £130
64GB Crucial RealSSD C300 £112 + Akasa AK-MX010 Mount £5
500GB Samsung HD502HJ Spinpoint F3 £33
520W Corsair HX Series Modular PSU £70
Total: £908 (with 1gb GTX460)
Any potential problems with that setup?
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
I would:-
-Move away from the sonata at £70 there should be a very nice alternatives.
-For £20 more go for the gtx460; even the 768mb should be much better than the 5770.
-Look to spend about half the amount on the PSU; you will only need 500W max.
-Is that a DDR2 board? For the ram's price you should get some nice DDR3.
-To save money I would skip the SSD and get a 500gb F3 or the 640 hitachi (people say it might be good) I saw recently. At 30gb you won't store much above OS and a game.
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Yea, that PSU is very much overkill. Get a nice modular Corsair or something, they're fantastic PSUs.
Regarding the SSD, just for reference, I've got a full fat Windows 7 install with Program Files (for everything apart from games) currently taking up 23GB. 30GB is theoretically enough, but I'm off the opinion that 40GB is the minimum really for a C drive.
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Chan,
I've just put this together for £740 with a bit of shopping around also included in the price is a new Sony optical drive and a Lancool K58 case.

1Tb Hitachi HDD
650w Antec True Power New PSU
I intend to get an SSD sometime in the near future when the prices drop a tad and I have convinced Mrs the Bun that it is money well spent.
Optical drive is courtesy of my old rig and maybe upgraded to a blu-ray as and when.
Thanks to everyone
I'm not saying you should copy me but I'm pointing out that with the quality of advice available here you should be able to shave a large chunk off your total.
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Monitor seems expensive as well, you could get a SM2343BW for around that price, with a bit higher res, or drop in price a bit and get a 22" with 1920x1080.
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
I know I keep banging this drum but the GTX260 from ebay (search for 'bfg 260') for £84 is a cracking deal & is on par with the 5770. Save yourself a few quid there!
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
You could even cut the Windows 7 OS size on the SSD to 15GB if you shrink keep the pagefile to about 1GB.
I'd say you can definitely do better with the money:
CPU: Phenom II 955 ~£130
Mobo: Asrock 890GX Extreme3 ~£90
Graphics: Inno3D GTX460 ~£150
RAM: OCZ Platinum 4GB 1333mhz DDR3 CL7 ~£90
HDD: 500GB Samsung F3 ~£30 or 2x 1TB Samsung F3 ~£85 on Scan Today Only
SSD: I'm not too sure which SSDs are good but I used Intel X-25M 80GB myself and it's very very fast. I've heard good things about the OCZ Vertex and the SandForce controller based SSDs too.
PSU: XFX 650W XXX ~£70
That comes to £560 without the case/monitor/SSD with 500GB storage or £615 with 2TB storage.
Anything below a GTX460 won't be able to handle the latest games at 1920*1080 at the highest settings, this is dependent on the type of games you'd play of course but I'd go for a GTX460 or perhaps a 5850 if you can fit it in to save yourself from a future upgrade.
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Ulti's build above seems the best bang for buck.
With reguards to the power supply mayby you could get away with an even lower unit like
Corsair HX 450W at £54
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/450W-...-year-Warranty
Or
OCZ 500W Mod XStreamat £55
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/152009
Gives you an extra £15 to use elsewhere like towards a GTX 260 1Gb or HD 5850.
With the case keep an eye on Scans today only for the Xclio Nightawk or Blackhawk. Iv seen both with pretty large savings on them on. Rob_B picked one of the Xclio Nighthawks up on that deal and you can read his impressions here.

If you just want a case to hold it all then Casecom 6788 is the way to go. A brilliant case for money. Pob255 did a review on it here. Ill have to try and find it now.

Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Thanks for feedback so far, so getting the GPU out the way, after reading through Hexus review of GTX460 vs others it seems it is a very good buy, maybe save the £20 needed for 1gb version from other parts! (£150 for 768mb or £175 for 1gb)
As for case, after looking at the others the 300 or 600 do seem a much better buy, the two antec cases I've had thus far have been superb so will probably go with the 300 for £42.
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
I would suggest the following build:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition ~ £128
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190673
Asus M4A87TD EVO ~ £78
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/206151
This is quite a nice motherboard although it does not do symmetrical Crossfire.
4GB 1333MHZ DDR3 ~ £75
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/178943
You could opt for lower latency 1333MHZ DDR3 or 1600MHZ DDR3 but this will cost more.
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB ~ £69
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/193712
The Samsung F3 1TB is better value but some of them have issues with the SB850 southbridge. However Samsung has released a firmware fix for affected drives.
Palit GTX460 768MB ~ £150
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/227181
Antec TruePower New 650W Modular PSU ~ £85
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159920
OR
520W Seasonic M12II-520 Bronze ~ £74
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/520W-...-M-B-connector
Remember to use your free Scan postage.
You maybe able to get away with an HX450W though.
The total comes to around £574 to £585 including postage and excluding a case, optical drive and monitor.
Aria currently have the HD5850 1GB for £195 excluding postage:

Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Updated my original post with alterations, starting to come together now. Re-review and post criticisms please!
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Stock cooler is okay. You can always upgrade later; there are loads of cheap coolers around available from play etc so you should be able to skimp postage.
You got enough case fans? I would be sorely tempted to go mATX and get a small case like a p180 mini.
Re: New system spec/price feedback!
Plus on the fan front the supplied fans on the antec 300 can be a bit noisy even on their lowest setting (if that bothers you). Regardless, I would buy 2 extra fans for extra ventilation. Zalman zm-f3 are fairly quiet and quite cheap!

From another thread i saw alot of people rating the fractal fans highly, the 120mm is £7 with only 15db. Was going to get 1 of them for the front slot, since its not included in the case, but wasn't fussed about the other two unless they are 'standout' noisy.

Worth bearing in mind with the GTX460 cards - the two sizes really ought to be different card classes.:
The difference between the 768 and 1GB 460 is not just the RAM provided. Due to the chip architecture you also loose ROPs - see Anandtech's article (link + extract below) for a full explanation - but the 768 card has 24 ROPs while the 1GB card has 32. £20 gets you a lot more capability.
Depending on how long you're looking to run this for, it might be worth paying the extra for a 1Gb card. 768MB is fine for now, but 1GB ram on the card (plus the extra ROPs) will help it keep up with the field for a little longer. If you're someone who changes their card every year or so then obviously you can ignore that, but I'm going for the 1GB card, and an overclocked one (make that an SLI pair) at that.

Moving on to the cards, NVIDIA is launching 2 cards today. At $229 there is the GeForce GTX 460 1GB, the closest thing we’ll see to a “full” GF104 part for the time being. The GTX 460 1GB has 7 of 8 SMs enabled along with all 32 ROPs, with a 256bit memory bus connecting the GPU to 1GB of GDDR5. The core is clocked at 675MHz core, 1350MHz shader, and 900MHz (3.6GHz effective) memory. The TDP for this part is 160W, with an unofficial idle power draw in the 20W-30W range.
The other GeForce GTX 460 being launched today is the GeForce GTX 460 768MB at $199, a slightly further cut-down card. As NVIDIA’s ROPs are closely tied to their memory controllers, the only way to reduce the amount of memory on a card is to disable memory controllers along with the ROPs. As a result the GTX 460 768MB has less memory than the GTX 460 1GB, but also only 24 ROPs connected to a 192bit memory bus. The shaders remain unchanged, giving the GTX 460 768MB the same compute/shading abilities as the GTX 460 1GB, but only 75% of the ROP capability and memory bandwidth. The clocks are unchanged from the GTX 460 1GB: 675MHz core, 1350MHz shader, and 900MHz (3.6GHz effective) memory.
Given these differences, we’re a bit dumbfounded by the naming. With the differences in memory and the differences in the ROP count, the two GTX 460 cards are distinctly different. If NVIDIA changed the clockspeeds in the slightest, we’d have the reincarnation of the GTX 275 and GTX 260. NVIDIA’s position is that the cards are close enough that they should have the same name, but this isn’t something we agree with. One of these cards should have had a different model number – probably the 768MB card with something like the GTX 455. The 1GB card does not eclipse the 768MB card, but this is going to lead to a lot of buyer confusion. The best GTX 460 is not the $199 one.

Re: New system spec/price feedback!
of course get a GTX 460 1GB
