What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

I know a lot of people will be making little upgrades over the next year or so, like dropping in an SSD, or getting a 58** or 48* graphics card, but what about the next machine?

Which technologies/advancements/features are you holding out for before you make your next big upgrade?

Personally, I'm waiting for a motherboard that fully supports SATA 3 and USB 3, with no legacy SATA 2 or USB 3 ports, and a case with USB 3 ports powered by proper motherboard headers.

I'm planning a full upgrade shortly, mainly for Crysis 2 and all the other games that will be coming out in the coming months.

Until I can get something with twice the performance, at half the price and a quarter of the power draw, I'll be sticking with what I have.

Well, what I will have when I've watercooled, overclocked and added a second 8800GTX, that is

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

For me probably the next batch of SSD's - or specifically Intel's, performance dependant of course.
I was going to upgrade the GPU but if rumours are to be believed the 6000 isn't going to be much of a step up over the 5000 and its going to be this time next year until Nvidia will have a newer design out I imagine.
So I'm expecting rather than hoping my GTX 260 will last that long, Crysis 2 could change that of course

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

Well for me, im still waiting for cash to pay for one but my £800 grant will do nicely .

Waiting for bulldozer before i retire my trusty e8400, depending on what the gpu's from AMD this year are like then i may upgrade my 4850, however ill probs wait for new gpu's next year or see how the pricing turns out when bulldozer is released.

Along with that i shall just buy a nice 200gb~ SSD, 2 x1tb HDD and have a nice new 24" monitor with full 1900x1200 display .

    Well, thats the plan anyway!.

After my major system upgrade next month I'd like to get an SSD but the prices are just too high for a decent sized unit. So SSD when the prices drop

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

    Always love this question

-price drop on i7-870, or maybe enthusiast sandy bridge or bulldozer
-4gb density DIMMs to be fast and reasonably prices
-robust USB3 and sata 6gbps implementations
-cases to come with 2.5" drive bays for..
    -affordable, long lasting SSD.

Not that I wait a while for major upgrades or anything. My last PC was a pIII

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

Im with Flash - gotta wait for my divorce settlement first, then .....

Whole new PC = Fast but not overclocked quad core, (does 6 make that much difference to non gamers?), SSD, 58** GFX HDMI (must admit my loyalties have changed from nVidia recently), the best sound I can afford. Win7 64 bit. LOTS of RAM, and LOTS and LOTS of HDD space - min 4TB (HD movies, photos, large music files). Silent, for HTPC duties. Min 22", poss even 24" full HD monitor.

Ill have to spend 6 grand fairly fast when it happens, due to my benefits, so maybe a new car too
    Cheers, David

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

I'm waiting for the next generation from Intel to appear and for the 3 Tb drives to come into fruitition at reasonable prices before I plan a new upgrade.

My Q6600 overclocked to the hilt works fine for all the tasks I use the PC for at the moment, so really the only thing I want to replace right about now is the case as it's seen better days.

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

I'm looking for an SSD and a new GPU over the next 6-12 months. Waiting for nVidia to complete it's line-up of new GPUS to bring the ATI cards down in price. The 6000 series will probably do the same and I might even wait for them for the 5000 series to come down as well.

As for the SSD - the new Corsair 60GB looks impressive - but I'm going to wait and see what the smaller manufacturing process yields in £/GB - PCs are always about waiting.

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

I can see me doing incremental updates for the next few years, unless it works out cheaper to buy a new motherboard than buy a PCIe Sata-3 adaptor when I finally crack and get one of the new really fast SSDs.

DDR5 main memory will probably be my tipping point for new mobo + cpu and I assume we are a way off that, though again my resistance could weaken if Bulldozer is good enough and my current mobo can't be made compatible with a BIOS update.
