    New HDD for Toshiba laptop

    Hi,
The hard drive on my Wife's brother's laptop has gone, and I am tasked with fixing it. Rather than him buy a new laptop, I thought about just buying a new disk and rebuilding the OS. Has anyone got any recomendations about a good disk to get? I know where I am with normal sized disks but don't have a clue about 2.5" ones. I've seen a few WD 500gb models for under £50, which look ideal. Any pitfalls, things to look for, things to avoid?

    Thanks

Just make sure its the same size in thickness 9.5 mm is normal some of the high capacity drives can be thicker.

Make sure its the same type of interface pata or sata.

I like samsung drives at 2.5 size.

and Hitachi that have been fine also for me.

You might consider a SSD for reliability if the laptop gets a hard life at more cost but they also run cooler and give better battery life on my netbook.

Check that the BIOS will recognize a larger drive as well.

Not as simple as it sounds but you should be able to get something to do the job.

Last year I replaced the 60Gb drive on a Tecra with a Tosh 120Gb drive. I could have used the WD equivalent but the Tosh was available on my doorstep.

If you have the restore disks the swap is very straightforward and the Tosh site has all the latest drivers & patches available for download. It is just time consuming completeing it. Very happy that I did not have to buy a new laptop.

Have since replaced failed drives in a Lenovo thinkpad and a Dell (Optimax I think). Very similar operation although not so easy without the recovery disk.

Oops. Quite a large mistake, on opening the laptop bag today, turns out the Toshiba has morphed into a Compaq Presario c700...
