Will my PSU handle a GTX 460?

    I'm looking at upgrading my 1Gb 8800GT with a 1Gb GTX460.

    My specs are:

    Hiper 530W PSU
    Q6600 running at stock 2.4GHz
    4GB Corsair XMS2 RAM
    Gigabyte EP35-DS3R motherboard
I've also got three hard drives

Will my PSU handle the new card, or will I need to upgrade that as well? If so, can someone recommend one that will do the job but won't break the bank!

Re: Will my PSU handle a GTX 460?

Some Hipers are temperamental. Mine ran hot so I stopped using it and got myself a Xigmatek 650w modular (not available now and also the Corsair HX450w)

I'd say upgrade especially as PSUs wear over time.
Not sure how much power the gtx460 uses, but if it's similar to a gtx275 then I'd recommend the Corsair HX450w

Earlier, I measured the watts my rig uses under load was going to start a thread on that tomorrow.

How did you measure the watts your rig uses?

Bought an energy measuring gadget a while back (from Lidl). You can pick them up from Maplins but can be cheaper elsewhere. Some energy companies are giving them away free but you can google it.

PS My rig was 350w max under load.

yes it should cope, however hiper had issues with their psu manufacture which ended up with a lot of dodgy units, later units, after they changed manufacture and took an active hand in quality control, were more reliable.
However the resulting brand damage and econmic downturn finally forced them bankrupt.

The Hiper brand went from promising newcommer to mud in the space of a year and never fully recovered, shame really the hiper Osiris was a great case with bags of potential

I got one on eBay, was quite illuminating to discover what my various PCs use.

All the servers I manage can produce this information from their management consoles, it's about time either the PSU or the motherboard integrated that kind of feature, especially high end overclockers units.

I've not had any issues with my PSU so far, and I've had it for over two years. I just wanted to know whether it could cope with the demands of the new card as I don't know a lot about voltage/rails etc.

Cheers for that, I'll have a look on there now. Would be interesting to see what they used up, even if just from a curiosity point of view.

Definitely agree with there needing to be some way of knowing how much of the capacity of the PSU is being used too.

    Cheers for the help all!
