Windows 98 + USB = baaaaaaaaaaaaad thing...
OK, firstly, is USB working at all?
What model printer is it? Is it USB-only or does it have a parallel port? If the latter, USE IT. USB under any of the 9X series is a bit flakey. If you must use it under USB, remove the printer completely (hint: it may have installed itself in Add/Remove Programs - if so, uninstall from there; if not, just delete it from Start, Settings, Printers); then reinstall according to the manufacturer's instructions. There should be a setup program for it, and that will prompt you as to when to plug the printer in via USB.
it is only USB. it is where you said, but where you put in where it is connected to the computer, there is no option!!! it is a HP Deskjet 3420.
