You see, this is the kind of information you need to provide to start with

I think I'd go for the more powerful one in black, tbh. Whilst she might not *choose* the black herself, people very rarely dislike black laptops - the coloured ones would be far more of a risk...

What are these skins like though? Are we talking something tacky that will look obviously like a sticker and then after a few weeks starts peeling and shows signs of dust/dirt accumulating in the edges?

Thats all its about to me, making sure I get the best laptop possible for my budget, I guess I need to see what these skins are like to see if they are worth trying.

Sorry about that, I thought I had mentioned it in this thread but it looks like I must have been mistaken.

Yeah, I think the back one is the better buy and would be the one I would go for if I was buying it for myself.

On a side note does anyone know anywhere that I can get a licensed copy of Microsoft Office 2007/2010 for a reasonable price? It needs to include Outlook if possible.

    Re: Which Processor??

the P6000 is slower, doesn't have virtualization (although I'm not sure how much use that would be), the i3 has both SSE4.1 and SSE4.2 instruction sets however I think the P6000 only has SSE4.1 (at least I so no mention of 4.2 in intel's blurb about it) again not sure if that's going to matter to her much.

so the option comes down to 1.8ghz dual core vs 2.2ghz HT dual core, in terms of performancy 1.8ghz dual core is survivable but I'd go for the 2.2ghz

one thing I will say is portability and battery life, if this is going to be carried around alot then a smaller laptop is often better or even a netbook (ok not good for games) if this is just going to be used a pc at student accommodation then a normal pc is probably better and less of a target for theft/burglary.
Laptops are very high on the list of things stolen from students.

Best bet for that is let her start uni and give her the money to buy it.

You need a valid sch.uk or ac.uk email address to get these, so giving her the money to buy it after she starts and has the email address is best

She will use the laptop 70% of the time plugged in to the mains, she is in her final year at Uni and living at home, she commutes every day to and from Uni so I thought the laptop would meet her needs here too.

She already has a normal "family" PC but she never seems to get chance to use it because someone else always is, thats where the laptop idea comes in. At least then it would be hers and she can just use it when ever she wants/needs to.

She's in her 3rd year so already has an .ac.uk e-mail address, would I be able to use this and purchase a copy of it without telling her?

I'm not 100% sure on this but they will probably send either confirmation or something like that to her email address. Of course if you could access her email and delete the message then it might work...High risk though Also the purchased software may come in the form of a download link - windows 7 did for me.

Exactly the same for the office pack AFAIK they'll send a download link and serial number to the email address.

You can do it as a blind, give her the money in a card with an explaination of what it's for, then tell her "of course that wouldn't be much help without something to run it on" and give her the laptop

Or include it in a card with an explaination and put it inside the laptop so when she opens it she'll see it.

That's one lucky girl to get such a present. you must care for her very much.

She doesn't seem to use her Uni e-mail address much at all so I should be fairly safe on ordering it. Although I know as soon as I do she will check her Uni e-mail for something lol!!

The card idea seems like a good one lol! Would make her laugh thats for sure.

Yeah I do , most of her friends seem to get jewelry and things like that but I don't find them practical presents and think she will get far more use and enjoyment from a nice laptop instead of a pair of earrings from Argos lol! Maybe I don't know women very well but it seems to have worked out ok for me so far

    Re: Which Processor??

Dear god, if you ever do get the urge to buy her jewelry don't get it from argos. try antique shops or non-chain jewelers who also buy old jewelry, an older peice will often be better quality.
