    Which Processor??

    Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy my girlfriend a Laptop some time next week. I've narrowed things down and I'm now left with two systems that are almost identical, they are exactly the same in every aspect but two. One is the colour of the laptop which I guess is irrelevant and the other is the Processor chips inside.

The first laptop comes with an Intel® Pentium® Processor P6000 (1.86GHz, 3M) and the whole thing is priced at £567.98

The second laptop comes with an i3-350M (2.26Ghz, 4Threads, 3M cache) and the whole thing is priced at £593.98

What is the difference in performance between the two chips and which one would be the "better" buy so to speak? (the laptop is going to be used for Uni Work, Browsing the Web/e-mail, iTunes, Watching movies, light gaming and light photography work. My budget is £600 max).

    Thanks,
    /Rookie

    Rookie error...

I'd go for the i3. It'll use less power while giving much better performance.. but something else must be different because it's also much more expensive than the first processor.

After a second look the laptops do have one other difference between them, the one costing £567.89 comes with a 320GB HDD and the one costing £593.98 comes with a 500GB HDD, other then this there are exactly the same components in each of them (excluding the coloured cases and processors).

The colour differences are Black, Red, Blue and Pink in the one with the Intel® Pentium® Processor P6000 (1.86GHz, 3M) and just Black in the one with the i3-350M (2.26Ghz, 4Threads, 3M cache).

    Re: Which Processor??

Well from a bloke perspective, the i3 based one is even better then.

However, your girl may prefer a red laptop even if it's half as good inside.

    Re: Which Processor??

Yeah, the i3 without a doubt, it's a very similar processor to the P6000 but with some extra features (most notably HyperThreading) and a higher clock speed. Well worth the extra ~£26

I guess this puts me in a bad situation lol, do I go for a different colour then Black and get the slightly worse system, or do I keep it in Black, pay the little extra and get the better system >.<

You ask your girlfriend which colour she wants. It's not a difficult concept

Both laptops will provide decent performance as they're both based on Intel's new 32nm architecture (Clarkdale?). Unless your girlfriend will be using it for anything heavily multithreaded, it doesn't much matter which processor you choose. Which I guess leads to the question, what will she be using it for?

Black never goes out of fashion. Plus if you go for a colour, what if you get it wrong?

I would get the faster notebook and then get one of those coloured laptop skins.

Yeah i know "It's not a difficult concept" to understand but it does ruin the element of surprise when she receives it as a gift for our anniversary, so I would rather not let her know she's getting one.

She will be using the laptop for Uni work primarily, with things like Web Browsing, E-mail, iTunes for Music/Movies/iPhone stuff, Gaming (Stuff like The Sims 3, Starcraft 2 and FF14) , Photography and Movie editing secondary.

    Cool.

Then it's a question of how well do you know your girlfriend. Is she going to be happier with a pink or red laptop, or one that performs slightly better?

Well I don't think she would be disappointed with a Black Laptop but she would most likely pick the Red one if given the choice.

I think CAT was right with the laptop skin idea. The extra-threadedness might come in useful and surely you will feel a bit bad for not buying the better deal. Plus the skin will protect the laptop and you can change the colour!
