Suggestions for a quiet graphics card.

So, what would people suggest for a quieter graphics card model than my current 8800GT? I'm getting kinda tired of the overly loud and whiney fan that is needed to keep the temps at the typical 90 degrees it runs at.

Ideally a gain in performance would be nice, but not essential.

Wont be a massive performance boost, i would guess its 10-15% faster?

If you have a fair budget to spend and a large enough case then going for something faster and a cooler is probably a better option.

PowerColor make a passively cooled HD5750:

    http://www.kikatek.com/product_info....source=froogle

AFAIK, an 8800GT is still faster than an HD5670.

Re: Suggestions for a quiet graphics card.

My case is pretty compact, it's a Lian Li PC-A50, so very short but full depth. The passively cooled HD5670 linked looks like a reasonable bet without spending a fortune.

Re: Suggestions for a quiet graphics card.

Remember that an HD5670 will be a downgrade over an 8800GT.

    Here is a comparison of the HD5670 1GB with the 9800GT 512MB:

    http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/A...D_5670/29.html

The 9800GT and 8800GT are essentially the same cards when it comes to performance in games as they share the same G92 core.

I would get an aftermarket cooler for your 8800GT such as a VF900 and use a fan controller with this.

All these product numbers are just confusing. What's wrong with calling them "Card 1 - Generation 1"

Toms suggests its better at some things and worse in others. 5670 wouldnt be an ideal solution, wouldnt even be a great one to be honest i would probably go for somethign quiet rather than silent.

Re: Suggestions for a quiet graphics card.

I put a Akasa heatsink fan on my 9800gt from scan and using it with a Zalman fanmate. I was thinking about upgrading but the 9800gt can still play the games that I have so I'm just going to wait and get a 5850 or GTX 260 when the prices get lower.

Re: Suggestions for a quiet graphics card.

I used to have the Arctic Cooling Accelero on my graphics card and I think it is phenomenally good. It dropped the temps by about 20*C and that's with the fans running slowly (there are 2 92mm fans on it). In fact, I've got it in my cupboard still, only cost about £15-20 new, too.

Like I said before a VF900 with a fan controller should do the job. I have one on an HD3870 in another computer and it is not too noisy IMHO.

Re: Suggestions for a quiet graphics card.

I recommend the Arctic Accelero S1 rev 2. I use it on my 8800GT without the fan attachment (but with a slow case fan in my p182 drawing air onto it). It idles at about 48 degrees, and under load it's about 64 degrees (way under the tolerable temperature for this card) and obviously it is totally silent.

If the cooling in your case isn't adequate you can get the Turbo module, which will require another slot space but will eliminate any issues with temperatures. Just make sure to attach the memory heatsinks properly.

Got a fan controller application at the moment, but the inbuilt cooler has to be up at 100% to actually cool the hard down from 100 degrees odd.

Unless the software is giving inaccurate readings, you need a new cooler I think.

Re: Suggestions for a quiet graphics card.

Could be software not reading it correctly.
Also have you tried cleaning it out recently? that might be the issue.

if that doesn't fix it, (the original 8800gt fan was small and whiney) I'd look at replaceing the cooler
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AKASA...e-BLUE-LED-fan
Although most people report it's a little noisey full blast, so some way to slow it down would be good.

The new Arctic Cooling Accelero +TwinTurbo Pro £24
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Arcti...idia-VGA-Cards

Cheaper? the Accelero L2 Pro should work ok
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Arcti...Pro-VGA-Cooler
review here http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1742&pageID=8058 granted that's a 4770 not a nvidia card but you should get simular results.
