What rating for USB hub?

Hi guys & gals

I have had a decent USB 2,0 hub for some time. It was very cheap - bought it from B&Q when they got rid of their PC stuff a few years back - and it has served me well. I used it unpowered up to now, but the time has come for the juice to be supplied.

However, there was no psu with it and there are no specs for the dc input on the case. In fact, apart from the title and the FCC declaration, there is no info on it at all about manufacturer or ought - so I can't simply look on their website for the spec.

My Belkin USB 1.1 hub has a psu with rating of 7.5v and 2.1A - but I don't know if USB 2.0 requires more juice.

So if someone could have a gleg at their own powered USB 2.0 hub and tell me their input/psu spec, that would be nice, thanks!

They all vary. I've got 1 here that has a 6v PSU and another that has a 7.5v PSU. Current wise, anything > 2.1amps will be fine.

You'll also need to make sure you have the polarity of the connector the right way around. It'll probably be easier to buy a new 4 port USB hub.

Okay, thanks - suspected as much - it makes things very simple.

New purchase won't be necessary, though - I have a boxful of psus and lots of different tips that can be attached both ways around. Even failing that, the soldering iron is my friend.

Trial and error isn't a great way of finding the polarity or required voltage. Cheap electronics are normally quite liable to go pop if they get the polarity wrong.

The maximum power a usb is allowed to supply is 500 mA. So a 2.1A PSU for a 4 port hub would be reasonable, as it would allow 4 max power devices. Can we have a picture of the power input and the of the hub?

You may be able to trace the mfr from the FCC id mark.
