Re: Motherboard advice
Lot of 775 mbs look to be going eol at the moment. Just upgraded from a Gigabyte DS3 P35 myself and it was absolutely rock solid for the 18 months or so I used it. Should be able to pick something like that up for around £30-40 s/h these days. Pay a bit more and you'll probably get a P45 equivalent, although if you're keeping your 8800 I wouldn't worry too much about getting a board with PCI-E 2 just yet.
I know a lot of people will recommend Asus over GB, and I must admit since I've gone x58 with an Asus board I've been very impressed with the overall quality and easy-to-use BIOS settings. You should be able to get something like a P5Q-SE2 new for well under £70 which would be more than adequate for your current components, although a P5K with the older chipset would serve you just as well tbh, and you can get one new for around £30 atm.

Re: Motherboard advice
It might be the cpu that it's having issues withbecause they didn't exist when it came out.
If you can try a different (older cpu on it) to see if it will boot
a 2nd hand board my be worth it, or as marktime said look for places flogging off old stock.
Asus boards are decent, the only issue for me with them is Q-Fan which has the single worst PWM settings of any make.
Personally I do like MSI boards, the MSi P35 Neo2-FR is an exellent board if you can find one.
