Spec for new PC

Been a while since I posted, and a couple of years since I put my machine together so asking for some advice for a work colleague who has put a proposed build together

He already has a monitor (24" 1920x1200 if I remember right), keyboard, mouse and he has got Win7 64bit through a work deal

Uses - gaming (FPS, RTS mainly) and the usual browsing and work related stuff when he works from home (Office 2010, etc)

His proposed build is as follows

Case - Silverstone PS-01S-W
PSU - 520W Corsair HX modular
Mobo - Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
CPU - i7 930
Memory - 6GB Corsair XMS3 Classic
HDD - 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3
Gfx - 1GB Asus HD5870
Optical - Pioneer DVD Re-writer

This all works out at around £1K (wish I had that much money to spare lol) but if it can be done slightly cheaper (ie swapping the 5870 for a 5850 etc) then suggest away
He has picked the Intel over AMD as he has always gone that route in the past and I wouldn't know where to start these days with what might be best for your money

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated and in the meantime I will be sending a link for this thread over to him

maybe swop out the 5870 for 2 GTX460's 1gb? £150 on scan today only so £300 total

Probably overkill. Something like this and put the savings into a SLI/XFire card ?

Pioneer tends to be a bit noisey I'd go with the samsung http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Samsu...SATA-Black-OEM

Depending on how finiky he is about fps numbers and e-peen, then a 5850 or gtx460 1gb should be ok
although 2x gtx260 1gb is also a nice option (will need a slightly better psu)

speaking of PSU you'll be unlikely to get the hx520w as it's EOL
if you want to stick with corsair then the HX650w http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/650W-...-Certification and will also be able to cope with crossfire/sli
Sticking with a single graphics card then the seasonic M12 (which is what the hx520w is) http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/520W-...-M-B-connector

Case, that's a rather old design, not sure what it'll be like for graphics card length.
An antec 300 would be a good option, a lot will depend on his taste in cases

I would reconmend switching your case,i have that Silverstone case and the cable management isn't so great if its a non-modular PSU and the work room isn't really good i would reconmend getting any of these 3:

Cheers for the alternatives - he has gone this route as he doesn't often change his machine so this would suit him for a fair bit of time

Pob, never considered the Samsung but thinking about it, I am sure I have got one in my machine... doh

He isn't too fussy about fps etc so I will suggest the 5850 or GTX460 instead and will point him in the direction of the Seasonic PSU as well
