Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
My system gets less fps than it should on games and I can't find out why. The only thing that it could be is the MCP overheating and I can't tell if it is that as the MCP heat sensor does'nt work. What would the symptoms of an overheating / faulty MCP be and could they cause "lag"?
Re: Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
It could, do you have the most up to date chip set drivers?

Hmm, ok seen as though I don't seem to be getting any answers the first person to help find the problem with my rig that is causing low fps will be given £10 through paypal or I can buy them something through steam worth £10.
Re: Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
whats your system mate?
No affence but you havent really given enough time for people to respond, a lot of hexus people work all the time and have busy days so give em chance :).
Re: Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
amd phenom 940 x 4 @ 3Ghz
4GB DDR2 Ram
ATI 4890
HAF 932
asus M3N78 pro
500 GB HDD
corsair 750 watt
I bought a saphire 4890 in may of last year. I have been feeling that it has been underperforming ever since I bought it , but I couldn't really be bothered to test it properly and I didn't play many games so I thought that it was just the games.
However I have started playing games a lot more on my PC recently and have been noticing even more that it may not be performing as well as it should be. For example in Garrysmod, a half life 2 mod my fps can be anything from 5 - 60 fps, usually around 30 with high settings, 2 x aa, 0 x af and 1920 x 1080. Also in team fortress, same settings I get similar framerates. In left 4 dead I also get similar framerates but with 8 x aa and 16 x af.
Often the fps in games drops really low for no apparent reason and I need to restart the game for it to get higher again.
I have reformatted my PC 3 times since I have had the graphics card trying to see if that would solve the problem, I have updated my drivers every month when they come out, removing the previous ones first and all of my temperatures are low, with my GPU temps not going above 65 degrees C and my cpu not going above 55. I also have all of the updates for XP which I am using.
Re: Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
that is quite odd, i think you maybe right that the northbridge is getting very hot and is resulting in decreased performance. Have you got active cooling on the NB (i.e a fan)?
Have you installed chipset drivers? Always worth a shot as it can be that sometimes. The 500GB HD, what make and model is it? It is possible that the HDD is on its way out so has been performing slowly and would also explain why reformating hasnt helped.
Re: Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
I have the latest drivers, it is a Western Digital 32mb cache, I have ran a scan on the harddrive with the tools that WD provide on their website and all of them said that the drive is fine. Also my MCP is passively cooled.
Just a side note, should I notice any lag on Counterstrike source with my rig as it is really annoying me that I am and I would like to know that if I fix this problem should I be seeing any lag? Thanks
Re: Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
Just as a quick aside - are you sure that what you're experiencing is actually a framerate/graphics issue and not a latency one. I only ask because I noticed that all of the games you have listed are multiplayer.
How does it perform using a benchmarking program or even one of the ATI testing tools? (Forgive me for not being up to date with which ones to use).
It was only a small thought, don't mean to offend. :)
Re: Would an overheating MCP cause fps lag?
I am sure that it is fps lag and not internet lag, I have experienced lag in single player games but I have just not mentioned them. I did run a 3dmark05 on all low settings, as I was using the free version and got a score of 19000.
