Best process for testing cpu temps under load?

    Hi guys,

My new Xigmatek s1283 heatsink has arrived to replace the stock AMD heatsink current sitting on my cpu. I know it'll improve the temps but i'm intrigued to find out just how much it will, so i'm looking for some tips from you knowledgeable people about how to best go about testing it.

Obviously, checking idle temps are pretty easy, just load up Real Temp, Speedfan or Core Temp etc... and note down the temps.

Now, to check load temps i was wondering what software and techniques you guys use, Prime95? Toast? etc... have never used any of them yet personally so could do with some guidance on settings and prefer test timescales please.

other than that, the only thing i can think of is trying to keep the room ambient temps constant so not to skew results.

    Anything i've missed?

    cheers guys.

Re: Best process for testing cpu temps under load?

I've found OCCT (download here) to be all I needed, and it produces lovely charts of your temperature and voltage (don't know whether the latter are trustworthy, though) variations - very convenient. There's also Prime95 (non-multithreaded I think, so running several instances isn't as good, IMO), wPrime (multi-threaded), Lynx, but I haven't used those.

But although it loads the CPU pretty heavily, OCCT didn't produce errors after 8 hours of testing of my undervolt, whereas folding@home did. Of course I don't recommend using folding@home for load testing, unless you would be willing to finish a whole work unit (there's a bit of learning to that, so just stick with other tools if you want fast and easy).

+1 for OCCT. The IBT is also strenuous, but OCCT is so simple to use that it's my preferred choice.

Re: Best process for testing cpu temps under load?

i could only game for hours after IBT passed a 50 run on max memory to prove stability, prime 95 was not intense enough to expose the little flaws in the overclock.

Yes, prime is an out of date test for modern machines.

Re: Best process for testing cpu temps under load?

Yeah, I've been having doubts about Prime 95 too. Just recently moved up to i7 and used it to stress the overclocked system - ran absolutely flawlessly for 8 hours. Within an hour of normal gaming the whole thing locked up, had to increase voltages for stability.

Whilst we're on the subject I'm interested to know if the 2 other programs mentioned - OCCT and i-burn have been updated to run with quad cores - last time I used them i-burn would only stress dual cores and you had to mess around in OCCT setting up affinities and the like to get it to work with all four cores.

Re: Best process for testing cpu temps under load?

I've found accidentally that there's a CPU stress-testing tool based on folding@home code called StressCPU, found here.

Should you try it, please tell your experiences

IBT is the one, set it to the correct amount of cores, 50 runs at max ram and wait.

OCCT is also fully designed for i7 (the chip of choice) and other quad-cores.
