USB to PS2 then back again...

OK I've just upgraded my main system and while it's very fast and living up to almost everything I wanted it to do I have one slight snag. I run a 4 port Belkin KVM switch which is PS2. Unfortunately the new Motherboard only has one PS2 port for the keyboard. So off on eBay I went and purchased a few PS2-USB converters.

Now this is where the problems start. The converters don't seem to work. The PC detects something is plugged into the USB port but fails to correctly detect it's a standard 3 button Microsoft Mouse. After contacting the seller they claim I need to use an item that is both USB and PS2 compliant - I'm thinking this is Bull as I've tried a MS Keyboard as well which gives you a USB or PS2 split lead built in with no joy

Does anyone use these converters and got them working? I'm tempted to buy the Belkin PS2-USB lead but want to make sure this will solve my issue.

    Thanks.

Post a link to the converter?

You get passive USB to PS2 adapters with a lot of MS mice and keyboards (I have a bunch of both the green ones and the purple ones). However all these do is change the physical connection, they do not do anything signal wise it is the device that does it. I suspect these are the same just the other way round.

Re: USB to PS2 then back again...

This is the auction I purchased them from http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWNX:IT

So far I tried a PS2 MS mouse, a MS multi-media keyboard and my 5 button MS mouse USB to PS2 then PS2 back to USB and none seem to work.

The seller has offered me a refund but most converters seem to be this design.

Re: USB to PS2 then back again...

Yup, that is a passive adapter, the device you connect it to would need to know about both PS2 and USB connections.

I'm not sure what to suggest to be honest. I've seen a few adapters that look a bit more involved than those (http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=10753) which I assume has an actual converter inside that bulge, but I'm not convinced they will do what you want either.

Re: USB to PS2 then back again...

You can use one of those adaptors Funkstar linked to connect the KVM to PC, I had a 2-port Belkin PS/2 KVM connected to a laptop that lacked PS/2 ports with one of those adaptors. You don't have to buy that particular adaptor from LinITX, you can get them for less on eBay.

EDIT: Just to re-iterate, you need an adaptor which looks like a cable with two PS/2 sockets on one end, a USB plug on the other and a box in the middle.

Re: USB to PS2 then back again...

I tried to use them before but they failed
    I ended up using this
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/122963
I know its not available but I did bookmark it a long time ago
I only plug the mouse in as the keyboards dont seem to work to well IIRC ( one or two keys didnt work through the KVM switch)

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
