    Alpenfohn?

Has anybody got any info on Alpenfohn. All their CPU coolers fall in the £30-£40 range and look the business but I not been able to find out much about them in terms of quality, reliability etc.

I ask because I've found what appears to be a bargain for mid to top end cooler.

Otherwise I am going with the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 as it's on offer.
Of course I'm perfect you just need to lower your expectations.

    Re: Alpenfohn?

Have you searched via the German google? It might be that they're more widely used/reviewed there. Personally I have no idea on CPU coolers at all so I'm not much help On the upside they're German, which means they're probably fairly decent.

Xbit Labs have done several reviews of their coolers, the search results are here.

    Thanks Queelis,

I did find that review and although it wasn't the model I was looking at it at least confirms the impression that I got that they are a quality manufacturer producing mid to top end coolers.

It's odd that there isn't much on them even using alternative search engines.

    Re: Alpenfohn?

Right...I found a few more reviews and this is what I went for.

    http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/...cat=161&page=1

And a bargain at a smidge over £21 for a cooler that beats the Titan Fenrir on just about every test (although not by much).

Maybe I should post this in the HEXUS Bargains thread
Of course I'm perfect you just need to lower your expectations.

Interested in the Brocken or Nordwand though the latter's 5 pipes don't make contact with the CPU - 3 and a slither of the outer two pipes it appears.

How does this compare with the Coolermaster 212 plus which is interesting too?

Noise is a concern too so would be interested in the difference in their noise and cooling abilities.

geezerzone...keep an eye on this thread and I'll post a link to the review I found when I get home. I would do it now but I was surfing for reviews for a couple of hours on friday and I buggered if I can remember which site it was.

Suffice to say it was better than the TITAN Fenrir in most, if not all areas, which, as the TITAN was my first choice to replace my stock, pleased me immensely as the A.B. was cheaper.

    On the noise level front...the A.B. advert posts a max dBA of 21.4, the C.M.212 claims 13 - 32dBA.

I'm not sure that I really believe that the A.B. will be that quiet in practice but if it's anywhere close to that I reckon the extra couple of quid is worth it.

    As promised

Both these reviews put this cooler in the same league as the Scythe Mugen

Looks decent and on a par with the hyper 212+

What's the fan quality like? looks like a cheap quality soft plastic.
But for £21 does look like a good bargin

Problem with things like this is they are probably not sold in the US, where the majority of review websites are.
That and e-tailers & price comparison sites tagging their stuff with "user reviews" (often near pointless) it means EU based reviews, esp non-english ones, can be very hard to find.

I know what you mean but the fact I couldn't find any negative reviews is a good sign.

Actually when I was trawling through SCAN yesterday I found this
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Alpen...40-AM2-AM2plus
Looks like the same cooler if the picture is anything to go by. But the SpecialTech one definately said fits AM3 boards. If it is the same I would definitely say I've got a bargain.

Typical...It arrives tomorrow. Still at least I used the postage to get a few other items as well which won't be on EBAY.

The the question is...Why!...Surely it would be better to build up your customer base by doing the same sort of offers on the website. This sort of dual pricing annoys me a bit.

Oh well...I still got a good price.

Re: Alpenfohn? The Eagle has landed!

    Ok! It's arrived.

But there are no instructions on AM3 fitting.

Can anyone tell me if there is any difference at all in the bracket required for fitting to an AM2, AM2+ or AM3 board? The advert clearly states on the web site that it fits AM3 but I'm reluctant to start taking things apart until I'm sure that I'm not wasting my time. Just in case this is time.

quite like the look of that and it has a dual fan mount option as well! cant complain either at £17.50delivered from the ebay specialtech, especially seeing as its apparently better than the fenrir.

Yes...trust me to find out about it after I bought the website one at £21.
The kit comes with the clips and vibration dampers for the extra fan.

    Ok...the good news.

Specialtech use a good courier that emailed me a one hour time slot which they arrived 15 minutes into.

Also Specialtech replied very quickly to both my emails and even took the trouble to get the AM3 instructions from Alpenfone for me with a promise of immediate posting of missing mounting brackets if necessary (it wasn't).

All in all a very good purchase, I shall be using these guys again.

Pob...the fan seems of reasonable quality to me but I'm no expert. Could you define "soft plastic".
Of course I'm perfect you just need to lower your expectations.

whats the paste like that comes with it? thinking that i might get one of these for my brothers i5 build, should keep it pretty cool with a modest OC, though i quite like the look of it myself actually......
