economical to run etc?
They are good for everything except photos. Economical to run, expensive to buy (but getting cheaper).
I thought colour lasers were the pinnacle of printing technology? :(
the resolution on laser printers is low, and they can print on a limited selection of media compared to inkjets. hotos will always be better on an inkjet.
and they are on the whole cheap to run, but the cheapest inkjets are cheaper than the costliest lasers in running costs, which surprises people
Colour lasers are the pinnacle of printer prices not technology :P .
As directhex says they are often cheaper to run and generally a lot faster but most inkjets can beat them no bother for print quality.
I didnt realise though that cheap inkjets are sometimes as cheap to run as good colour lasers. Interesting.
Well cheapness to run depends on how much you actually use them. Ive got a networked colour inkjet (hp deskjet 6127, £150) thats printed nearly 10,000 pages in 6 months. Its gone through a mighty pile of black and colour cartrages, £hundreds worth. Ive also got a Minolta Magicolour 2200 Desklaser - and that, while costing £799 is still using the CMYK toners that came free with it. Ill wager that over the next three years the total cost of ownership of the desklaser will be far less than the deskjet, and also ill wager that the deskjet will not last another 3 years (probably not last another 1 year) whereas the desklaser was designed to print day in day out for 5 years, and it will.
So - total cost of ownership depends entireley on how much you use the printer.
Butuz
Lasers can take more of a beating than inkjets I've found.
Still, the quality on my R200 inkjet is amazing - lasers just can't match that.
If a laser printer hasnt been used for a while they need to warm up aswell. In college ive noticed they take a while to warm up and calibrate. So by the time this is complete most injects could have printed a small document out.
so which inkjet is the one to go for then?
I got the Epson Stylus Photo 935 about 6 months ago, cost around 200 quid then, not sure now. I print a fair chucnk off it and its pretty good, you can get unoffical cartridgess for about 12-15 quid a pair. It can (and does) print off around 8-10 ppm black and 3-5 ppm colour. Its a bit large but it does everything you need in a printer. Best purchase I ever made :)
