AMD or Intel for a gaming rig?
So, let's say you have a few hundred quid for a gaming rig upgrade. Would you base your upgraded system around an AMD 890FX chipset with a Phenom X6 1055T? Or would you go with a P55 board and a Core i5 760?
I ask because several years back I had an AMD Athlon XP2500 which at the time was one of the best on the market due to overclocking potential vs. price. AMD pretty much dominated the performance PC market. Then a couple of years ago I switched to Intel as they had a better hold on the dual core market. However, now it seems that AMD are again making some pretty powerful CPU's in quad and even 6 cores, but most reviews on these chips say that the same, or similar priced, Intel dual/quad counterparts are more powerful for gaming.
I dunno, I guess there's not a lot between them, but "bang for buck", for say £300 for both motherboard and CPU, what would you choose? AMD or Intel?
(P.S. no fanboi's please)
Re: AMD or Intel for a gaming rig?
I think there is not much difference between the two in games.
buy whichever suits your budget better...the reason I would go with amd is the price...
btw, what gpu will be used in your system?
Re: AMD or Intel for a gaming rig?
Purely for gaming then the Intel build would be better. Games don't gain any advantage beyond three cores, so the fastest three cores you can get the better, which out of the two you list is the i5 760, especially when overclocked.

That's the point, considering the minimal difference in gaming performance, I think it's better to go with amd if it means that you can save some cash.
also, considering that you can buy a six core cpu for the same price then it might give you a welcomed performance boost if you happen to use some properly threaded apps.
btw, what are the plans with s1156? I've seen that the new cpus from intel will use a different socket.
Re: AMD or Intel for a gaming rig?
On the other hand though, you could trade the Phenom II X6 for a Phenom II X4, save a few tenners and still get good gaming performance. Or you could go for a Phenom II X2 and hope to get lucky with unlocking some inactive cores. AMD gives you a lot more ways to use your budget than Intel (IMNSHO, that is ;) ).
The real shame is that the promised Phenom II X4 "T" processors haven't made the light of day yet - I assume the X6 are selling well enough and yielding well enough that they haven't felt the need to bin any...

And several games show a much better performance for the 750 vs the 1055T, let alone the 760 being considered here.

Yep, same as with AMD. Both manufacturers are EOLing their current sockets.

Looking at the graphs I think it's kinda misleading. why would it be better for gaming if it produced only +3 fps on average?

Probably looking at a GTX460 or a 5830/5850.

Didn't think of that, dropping to a Phenom II X4 955 would save a fair bit yet still be able to be OC'd and perform just as well in games.

i5 750 vs X6 1055T
Fallout 3: 86.2 - 80.4 = +5.8
L4D: 130.1 - 111.5 = +18.6
Crysis Warhead: 83.3 - 72.4 = +10.9
BatmanAA: 188 - 180 = +8
DA:O: 141.3 - 102 = +39.3
DoWII: 65.3 - 52.8 = +12.5
Average fps increase = 95.1/6 = +15.85
That's a bit more than your +3 :p
And the 760 is even faster.

yes, it is, you are right. Though I'm not sure if it has any real world advantage. not to mention that it's not perceptible.
I'm mean I couldn't care less if my CPU can do 10fps less than the other one when we speak about more than 60fps in every game :D
furthermore, when you play in higher resolution then it will be more and more bottlenecked by gpu, so the difference between the platforms will vanish.
Re: AMD or Intel for a gaming rig?
Is simple.
Low cost PC up to midrange: AMD.
mid-high end PC: Intel.
I typically stick the Athlon II X4 600 series in my recommended builds up to a certain price (said price depends on storage or required GPU power), and beyond that the i5 750/760.
The AMD X6 CPUs are useless for gamers, that's not what they're for.
